SPAIN Funeral services for Richard T. Spain, 87, prominent farmer of Sussex county, who died at his home early Sunday, were held at Sebrell this afternoon with the Rev. C.F. Carlton conducting the rites. Mr. Spain to survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Tyner, of Sussex, Mrs. Mattie Spain, of Sebrell, and Mrs. Frances Birdsong, of Nakomis, Fla.; two sons, John B. Spain, of Suffolk, and James T. Spain, of Nansemond county. ****************************************************************************** RICHARD THOMAS SPAIN Funeral services for Richard (Dick) Thomas Spain, age 87, were held at the grave in Sebrell cemetery Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock conducted by a former pastor, Rev. G.S. Carlton, of Stony Creek M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. A.W. Roten of Sebrell M.E. Church. Mr. Spain died at his home in Sussex County near the Southampton County line, Sunday morning after a long illness. He was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church in Sussex County. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Tyner of Sussex, Mrs. C.F. Spain of Sebrell, Mrs. W.B. Birdsong of Mapleton, Florida; two sons, J.B. Spain of Suffolk and J.T. Spain of Chuckatuck. During the services the hymns "Nearer My God To Thee," and "God Will Take Care of You" were sung. There were many beautiful floral tributes, the casket being covered with a spray of white carnations, pink roses and fern. Active pallbearers were: J.T. Magee, S.C. Hughes, T.O. Simmons, W.T. Parker, R.H. Stephenson, Jr., E.F. Johnson, J.J. Holland and Herman Roach. Birthdate &c. from D.Cert. 11772 (Newville #3); last farmed in 1934; informant [son] J.B. SPAIN, of Suffolk, did not know Dick's parents. Find a Grave Mem. #57378989 gives s/o Parthenia M. WYNN SPAIN-LEWIS, (1823 - 26 Jan 1899), confusing him with Richard Thomas Jefferson SPAIN (4 Jul 1852 - 4 Aug 1929). R.T.J. & Parthenia M. (GRAY SPAIN; Mrs. Joseph M.) LEWIS are both buried in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. His likely brother Wm. Emmett SPAIN (22 Nov 1847 - 1 May 1924), son of James & Mary (BUTLER) SPAIN, was buried in Oak Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, Sussex Co., but is marked in Waverly Cemetery. Frances, Wm. E. & Richard T. SPAIN appear in the 1850 Census (Lower Dist., Chesterfield Co., with Richard & Mary A.E. (HARMON) SPAIN. They appear in the 1860 Census (Southern Dist., Chesterfield Co.) with Patience FERGUSON.
