STEPHENSON Mrs. Lillian James Stephenson, 54, first president of the Wakefield Woman’s Club, died Sunday in a Tucson, Arizona hospital. For about 10 years before her marriage in 1932, she was a teacher. She was superintendent of the children’s department of the Wakefield Methodist Church Sunday school at one time. A daughter of Mrs. Lillian Noyes James of Hampton and the late Leonard Wallace James, she was a native of Surry County, a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and of Richmond Norman College. Survivors include her mother; a daughter, Mrs. George H. Stroud, Jr., of Suffolk; two brothers, Joseph N. James of Alexandria, and L. Eldon James of Hampton, and two granddaughters. A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Purviance Funeral Chapel by the Rev. L.P. Bland of the Wakefield Methodist Church and the Rev. D.M. Cotter of the Wakefield Baptist Church. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. Those desiring may contribute to Wakefield Baptist Church in lieu of sending flowers. Pallbearers will be C.E. Holladay, J.N. Savedge, Charlie Jones, John Carson, E.L. Harris and R.M. Cobb.
