Robert James "Mutt" Slade, Jr., 81, of S. 18th Ave., Hopewell, died Sat. April 8, 2000 in Health South Medical Center, Richmond, after a long illness. A native of Dendron, Va., he was born on Nov. 13, 1918, the son of the late Robert James, Sr. and Edna Whitmore Slade. He had formerly been a Surry County farmer and retired as a truck driver for Franklin Equipment Company. He was a member of Union Congregational Christian Church, Surry County and had attended Dendron Methodist Church and the Abundant Life Pentecostal Holiness Church in Prince George. He was a charter member of the Blackwater Sportsman’s Club in Surry County. He is survived by his wife Gayle Hudson Slade; a daughter, Donna Leigh Slade of Surry; four step-sons, Ronnie Ray Broughton of Casper, WY, Donnie Earl Broughton of Hopewell, Jerry Olson Broughton of Prince George and Anthony Kell Broughton of Rayston, GA; a sister, Edna Slade Pitts of Gouchland; a brother Kenneth J. Slade of Wakefield; 12 step-grandchildren; and one step great- granddaughter. He was the brother of the late Mary Slade Price. A funeral service will be held in Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield on April 12 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Union Church Cemetery, Surry County. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Dendron of Surry Volunteer Fire department or to the building fund of Abundant Life Pentecostal Holiness Church, Prince George.
