A native of Sussex County, he was born April 27, 1868, a son of the late Jesse H.* and Mary Louise Land Shelton. Surviving are two sons, W. Heber Shelton of Stuarts Draft and David J. Shelton, Nashville, Tenn.; grandson, David J. Jr., and a niece, Mrs. J.B. Patterson, both of Staunton; and a siser, Mrs. R.H. Stephenson of Littleton, Sussex County. Graveside services will be held at Wakefield Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock. Mr. Shelton had requested that flowers be omitted. His father (May 1826 - 14 Dec 1909) went by his middle name, Harper. He served in Co. A, 41st Va. Infantry, CSA. He was buried in Montrose Cemetery, near Littleton, Sussex Co. His daughter applied for a military headstone in 1932. Find a Grave calls it the Stephenson family cemetery. David's sister, Maggie Lee (SHELTON; Mrs. Robert H.) STEPHENSON (1861-1961) is listed by her maiden name. An article ("95-Year-Old Sussex Resident Is Peppery Conversationalist") posted with Find a Grave Mem. #34279111 states that their father owned Coppahaunk Springs, near Waverly. Harper's brother-in-law Albert Lewis LAND (1828-1873) also served in the 41st Va. He wrote Harper 15 Nov 1862, from near Culpeper C.H. The letter is in the LVA Archives & Manuscripts Collection.
