Born in Southampton County, he was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Barrett’s Congregational Christian Church, Wakefield, and the B&B Hunt Club. Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Helen S. Chesson of Franklin, Mrs. Bernice S. Gay and Miss Charlotte S. Simms, both of Wakefield, Mrs. Sue S. Garner and Mrs. Rose S. Nurney, both of Ivor, and Mrs. Josephine S. Gwaltney of Suffolk; three sons, Charlie Babb of Portsmouth, John S. Simms Jr. of Sedley and William Simms of Waverly; 20 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. R.E. Brittle. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home and request that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Ivor or Waverly Rescue Squad. ****************************************************************************** John R. Simms Sr. WAKEFIELD - John Richard Simms Sr., 81, died Sept. 25 at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin. Mr. Simms was a native of Southampton County and was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Barrett's Congregational Christian Church and the B and B Hunt Club. He was the son the late William Thomas [sic*] and Victoria Hedgepeth Simms. He was the husband of the late Nannie Stephenson Simms. Survivors include six daughters, Helen S. Chesson of Franklin, Bernice S. Gay of Wakefield, Charlotte S. Simms of Wakefield, Sue E. Garner of Ivor, Rose S. Nurney of Ivor, and Josephine S. Gwaltney of Suffolk; three sons, Charlie Babb of Portsmouth, John R. Simms Jr. of Sedley and William Simms; 20 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. A funeral service was held Sept. 27 at Purviance Funeral Chapel. Dr. R.E. Brittle performed the service. Memorial donations can be made to the Ivor Rescue Squad or the Waverly Rescue Squad.
