Mr. Smith had been an installer and repairman for Continental Telephone of Virginia for 15 years. He was a member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member and deacon of Wakefield Baptist Church, a past master of Wakefield Masonic Lodge 198 and a district grand deputy of the Masons. He was a veteran of the Navy. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Maynard Smith; a daughter, Daphne Lynn Smith, and a son, Christopher Clay Smith, both of Wakefield; his parents, Mary LaPrade Smith and Charlie Carl Smith of Chase City; a sister, Margie S. Towberman of Wakefield; and a brother, Charlie C. Smith Jr. of Chase City. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Purviance Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Parker Hooper. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be sent to a local rescue squad.
