All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ NANNIE HARVELL SMITH Mrs. Nannie Harvell Smith, 98 years of age, formerly of Wakefield, Va., died Thursday, July 11, 1996 in Richmond. Mrs. Smith was a native of Southampton County, Va. and was the widow of William Durwood* Smith, of Enfield, N.C. She made her home in Enfield for many years, where she taught in public schools. Upon retirement, she lived in Wakefield. Since 1978, she had been a resident of the Lakewood Manor Baptist Retirement Community in Richmond. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Ransom D. and Nannie Branch Harvell. She attended the Sate Norman School at Farmville, Va. (now Longwood College), and completed additional studies at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College), Wilson, N.C., at East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. and at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C. She retired after 43 years of teaching in Virginia and North Carolina. At the time of her death, Mrs. Smith was a member of Ridge Baptist Church, Richmond. She was a former member of the Wakefield Baptist Church where she was active in the Woman’s Missionary Union, the WMU Prayer Group, and the Reese Sunday School Class. In addition to her church activities, Mrs. Smith as a member of the Senior Woman’s Club of Wakefield and the North Carolina Education Association. Mrs. Smith is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great- nephews. A funeral service will be held at the Purviance Funeral Home in Wakefield on Monday, July 15, 1996 at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at the Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Isle of Wight County, Va. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lakewood Manor Retirement Benevolent Fund, Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Dr., Richmond, Va. 23233, or to the Wakefield Baptist Church, Wakefield, Va. 23888.
