Born in Cable [sic; Cabell] County, W.Va., he retired from the Virginia Department of Highways in 1970. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Blake Sowards; two daughters, Mrs. Mary S. Stewart of Surry and Mrs. Jean Elizabeth Goodrich of Smithfield; a son, William T. Sowards of Prince George County; a sister, Mrs. Alice S. Ronk of West Virginia; three brothers, Pearl O. Sowards, Moses Sowards and Lawrence Sowards, all of West Virginia; nine grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday, Jan 5, in Purviance Funeral Home. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Wakefield.
