All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JEB STUART WHITE WAKEFIELD PIONEER LEAVES LONG LIST OF CIVIC ACTS Jeb Stuart White, 78, former Mayor and one of the pioneer citizens of Wakefield, died in a Suffolk hospital, Sunday, Feb. 13, after a long illness. Mr. White was a member of the Wakefield Methodist Church and his list of activities include a long list of pioneer activities; he established a mercantile store in 1903; sold the first victrolas, radios, gasoline, sporting goods, television sets in Wakefield; owned and operated the first water supply system for the town; while Mayor, established Wakefield Cemetery; established Wakefield's first fire department; while of Sussex County School Board, the Wakefield School was built; he supervised construction of the first sidewalks there and operated the first motion picture theater. He was a member of the Red Cross Board of the county, a director of The Bank of Sussex and Surry and was active generally in all phases of business life. Summing these and other acts which he accomplished for the town, he was recognized as one of the guiding spirits of Wakefield. Mr. White is survived by two daughters, Mrs. V.W. Hines, of Wakefield, and Mrs. Horace Bass, of Danville; one step-daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Willis, of Waverly; two stepsons, R.L. Pond, of Wakefield, and L.C. Pond, of Birmingham, Ala.; three sisters, Mrs. J.E. Bain, Mrs. W.A. Harris, and Mrs. J.A. Hatch, all of Wakefield, and five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral rites were held Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 3 p.m. at the Purviance Funeral Chapel with burial in the Wakefield Cemetery. Rev. L.P. Bland and Rev. John White officiated. Active pallbearers were Lyle Pond, Rob Pond, Paul Rogers, John E. Williams, J.N. Barker, S.I. Jenkins, Robert Hatch and E.A. Hatch. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family. The men's choir of the church sang "Beautiful Isle" with Mrs. W.A. Stephenson as pianist.
