Emmett Gilliam's Case - Deep Snow - Child Fatally Burned. WAVERLY, VA., February 19. - (Special.) - At the February term of the County Court of Sussex a nolle prosequi was entered in the case of the Commonwealth vs. Emmett Gilliam, charged with abducting Mattie Smith, a white girl who resides near Jarratt's, in this county. Gilliam was at once rearrested on a warrant charging him with an offence against morality, taken before a Justice of the Peace, and bailed for his appearance at his trial, which was to be held a few days later at Jarratt's Depot. Your correspondent has never learned the result of the examination before the justice. The snow which fell here a few days ago was the heaviest which the citizens have witnessed for a number of years. In some instances buildings gave way under the weight of the snow. It melts very slowly and is materially interfering with all kinds of business in this section. Elsie West, the 11-year-oid daughter of Mr. John W. West, of this place, is suffering from an attack of appendicitis. On yesterday the 3-year-old child of Mr. J.T. White, a farmer residing about three miles from Waverly, fell into the fire and was burned to death. child of J.T. WHITE, fatally burned 18 Feb 1902, near Waverly, possibly Joseph Thomas WHITE, Jr., interred in Spring Hill Christian Church Cemetery*, "Richmond (VA) Dispatch," Vol. 1902, No. 15867, Feb. 20, 1902, p. 3, col. 6 *His marker shows 1897 - 1903. Find a Grave calls it Springhill Cemetery. (Mem. #52697605 &c.) His parents are also buried there. Their monument shows Joseph Thomas WHITE, 4 Jan 1862 - 1 Jun 1928, & Segar CHAPMAN WHITE, 18 Nov 1869 - 28 Mar 1906. Joseph Thomas WHITE, s/o Edwin T. & Martha A. WHITE, 1m. Segar G. CHAPMAN, d/o Charles J. & Marjorie (PULLEY) CHAPMAN, 7 Nov 1894, in Isle of Wight Co. (Isle of Wight Co. M.Reg. {BVS copy} 1894 p. 226 #22) The 1900 Census (Waverly Dist., Sussex Co.) gives Joseph T. (b. Jan 1863), Segar G. (b. Sep 1865; m. 5 yrs, 3 of 3 ch surviving), 2 daughters, & son Joseph A. (b. Dec 1897). Their son Edwin Carl WHITE (1901-1939) is buried in Waverly Cemetery. Joseph Sr. 2m. Mary Roxie RIGGAN (1873-1955), d/o Jesse B. & Mary Ann (SHARPE; RIGGAN, 6 Dec 1911 in Surry Co. Roxie is also buried in Waverly Cemetery.
