Born Jan. 22, 1908, in Surry County, he was a son of the late Joel Claude and Sala Branch Whitmore. Mr. Whitmore owned and operated Whitmore Brothers Store in Wakefield from 1938 through December 1994 and had a combined total of 68 years with the store, having worked for the previous owners, Farmers Produce Exchange Corp., 12 years prior to buying it. He was a member of Wakefield United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Damsel Whitmore; a son, Samuel Aubrey Whitmore, Jr. of Wakefield; two grandsons, Jeffrey Ellis Whitmore of Mechanicsville and Gregory Joel Whitmore and his wife Lisa, of Claremont; a sister, Sue Whitmore Jones of Surry; and three brothers, J. Braxton Whitmore of Smithfield and W. Grady Whitmore and J.C. Whitmore, Jr., both of Wakefield. He was predeceased by a sister Elizabeth Whitmore Harrison, and a daughter-in- law, Faye Ellis Whitmore. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Wakefield United Methodist Church by the Rev. Randy Duncan. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 7:30 p.m. today at Wakefield United Methodist Church and other times at the residence and suggest that memorials be made to the Wakefield UMC, P.O. Box 87, Wakefield, VA. 23888, or to a favorite charity. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge of arrangements.
