Born in Wakefield, VA, he was a son of the late William Joseph and Keturah Avery Warthan. Mel served in the Air Force as a member of the Strategic Air Command, stationed in the Canadian Province of Labrador. He started his work career with Allied Chemical in Hopewell, VA eventually moving to New York, Houston and Morristown, NJ. He held various executive positions with numerous Allied subsidiaries and eventually retired in 1981, when he joined Chemical Enterprises, Inc., a Houston based private firm, as Executive Vice President. Eventually in 1984 he pursued his own entrepreneurial interest as he co- founded Chemomm, Inc., a Houston based chemical manufacturer and chemical distributer and Biospectra, Ind., and Eastern PA based biopharmaceutical startup with business partner Tolis Thanos. In 2006 he moved to his beloved home and family in the "blue blood" state of Virginia. He continued working and growing his new business Warthan Enterprises, LLC, until his last breath. Mel was an example to all through his adherence to high values, hard work and caring heart to all he touched. Family to Mel was not just Evelyn, Mel Jr. and Michael but all the many nephews, nieces and business associates. His humor, fun loving thoughtful approach to life, his encouraging spirit aimed to make people around him better will live into the hearts and memories of all of us. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons, Melvin Guy Warthan, Jr., and Michael Avery Warthan; brothers, Linwood F. Warthan, John W. Warthan, and Marvin K. Warthan; sisters, Ermine F. Oakes, and Mae K. Loughridge. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Evelyn Baker Warthan; granddaughter, Nicole Warthan and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2016 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel with Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
