VERNARD LAYDON WORRELL

  WAKEFIELD - Mr. Vernard Laydon Worrell Sr., 93, owner and operator of 
Worrell Appliance and Propane Gas Distributor for 55 years, died Nov. 15, 
1989, in Autumn Care Nursing Home, Suffolk.

  Mr. Worrell was a native of Southampton County and lived in Wakefield 
area for more than 66 years.  He was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church; 
the Ruritan Club; Wakefield Masonic Lodge #198, AF & AM; the Wakefield Hunt 
Club; and the Sportsman's Club.

  He served on the Wakefield Town Council from 1949 to 1952.  He was 
superintendent of utilities for the town from 1930 to 1948 and helped 
establish the utilities department.

  Survivors include a son, V.L. Worrell, Jr. of Wakefield; four sisters, 
J.R. Harris, Mrs. R.R. Magee and Mrs. W.G. Whitmore, all of Wakefield, and 
Mrs. F.T. Clarke of Hampton; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

  A funeral was conducted in Purviance Funeral Home by the Rev. Parker Hooper. 
Burial was in Wakefield Cemetery.

  The family request expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions 
to a favorite charity.
