Sussex County to wit: This is to certify that the Clerk of the County aforesaid has my consent to issue a license for the purpose of celebrating the rites of matrimony between myself and John Birdsong, and for so doing this shall be your sufficient warrant. Given under my hand this 27th day of April 1849. Catherine(herxmark)Lanier. Witness: Joseph Birdsong. (Reference 1849-7). Know all men by these presents, that we John Birdsong and Joseph Birdsong are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to be paid to the said Commonwealth: for the payment whereof, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our Seals, and dated this 28th day of April 1849. The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be held, and solemnized between the above bound John Birdsong and Catherine Lanier of the county of Sussex.
