To the Clerk of Sussex County: I do hereby certify that you are authorized to grant a licence for solomnizing the rites of matrimony between William F. Saunders and myself and that I am twenty one years of age. Given under my hand this ___ day of Jan.7,1848. Julia A. Davis. (Reference 1848-3). Know all men by these presents, that we William F. Saunders and Charles S. Stuart are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to be paid to the said Commonwealth: for the payment whereof, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our Seals, and dated this 17th day of January 1848. The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be held, and solemnized between the above bound William F. Saunders and Julia A. Davis of the county of Sussex. Now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage, then the above obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. William F.
