IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I AMBROS GRIZARD of the county of sussex, being very sick but of sound & 
perfect mind & memory thaks be to Almighty God & calling to mind the uncertainly of this life do think proper to 
dispose of what it hath pleased God to bless me with in the following manner 
IMPRIMIS I lend unto my beloved wife LUCY GRIZARD during her natural life the following negroes - John, Sam 
& Moll, also as much of my household & kitchen furniture as she may think necessary for her use also as much of 
my stock of horses cattle sheep & hoggs as she may think proper to take out for her use. 
ITEM I give & bequeath unto my beloved son WILLIAM GRIZARD one half of the land I now live on containing 
five hundred & seventy five acres it being the whole of the land purchased of JOSEPH PRINCE and if my said Son 
WILLIAM GRIZARD & my Son JOHN GRIZARD who I allot the other half of the said five hundred & seventy 
five acres cannot agree upon the dividing line between them then it is my will & desire that my Son in Law JOHN 
AVENT & my friend JOSHUA THORP & LITTLEBERRY MASON be and they are hereby authorised to divide 
the same between my two sons WILLIAM GRIZARD & JOHN GRIZARD which said one half I give to my son 
WILLIAM GRIZARD to him & his heirs forever. Also my Negro fellow LUKE I give to my said Son to take 
possession of at the end of the year or when the present crop is finished that may be growing at my death & I do 
moreover give to my son WILLIAM the colt my young bay mare may have the insuing spring which my said Son 
hath put to Mr JOSHUA THORP's horse 
ITEM I give & bequeath unto my beloved Son JOHN GRIZARD one half of the land I now live on the whoe to be 
devided between my Son WILLIAM GRIZARD & my said Son JOHN and it is my will & desire that my Son 
William have the upper half & my Son JOHN the lower half with the houses I now live in also I give my said Son 
JOHN a horse to be raised from one of the mares I now own against he shall arrive to the age of eighteen years to be 
raised out of my Estate 
ITEM I give & bequeath unto my beloved son AMBROS GRIZARD when his brother JOHN shall arrive to the age 
of eighteen years the choice of all my Negroes that I may have at that time also the colt my old bay mare is now with 
foald with in lieu of his portion of land give his two brothers 
ITEM It is my will & desire that when my beloved Son JOHN GRIZARD shall arrive to the age of eighteen years 
that then the wole of my Estate not before given away be equally divided amonst all my children to wit WILLIAM 
GRIZARD only he is to account for the value of the Negro Luke given him before, MARY GRIZARD, 
ELIZABETH AVENT wife of JOHN AVENT, LUCY GRIZARD, AMBROS GRIZARD & JOHN GRIZARD, to 
each of them & their heirs for ever, and at the death of my beloved wfie it is my will & desire that all the portion 
allotted to her be equally divided amongst my six children above mentioned to them & their heirs. 
LASTLY I do nominate & appoint my beloved Son WILLIAM GRIZARD & my Son in Law JOH AVENT 
Executors to this my last will & testament makeing retifying & confirming this & no other to be my last will & 
testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal the 14th day of May 1781

At a Court held for the Sussex County the 16th day of August 1781 
the last Will & Testament of AMBROSE GRIZARD dec'd was exhibited in Court by WILLIAM GRIZZARD & 
JOHN AVENT the Executors therein named proved by the oath of LITTLEBERRY MASON & JOSHUA THORP 
two of the witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded & on the motion of said Executors who made oath according 
to Law & with NATHANIEL HOLT & LITTLEBERRY MASON their securities entered into & acknowledged 
their bond in tepenalty of Ten hundred thousand pounds conditioned as the law directs. Certificate is granted them 
for obtaining a probate thereof in due form
