In the name of God Amen I Stephen Hamlin of Sussex County Virginia, being weak in body, but of pefect memory & knowledge that is appointed once for all men to die after that the judgement do make and ordain this my last Will & Testament in manner as followeth, I leave the use of the land I now live on with the use of six Negroes such as my wife shall choose and the Houshold furniture with the third part of the stock to my wife Sarah Hamlin during her natural life or widowhood. ITEM. I give half the land that I now live on to my Son William Hamlin, and the other half to my Son Charles Hamlin, only that my Son William & Charles pay unto my Son John Hamlin Twenty five pounds each of them when my Son John comes of age and then the above gift to be good to them & their heirs. ITEM. I give to my Son William Hamlin two Negroes Charles & Naomy one feather bed and furniture to him & his heirs forever. ITEM. I give to my Daughter Susannah Hargrave two Negroes Rose & Tom one bed and furniture one side saddle to her & her heirs. ITEM. I give to my Daughter Nanne Hamlin two Negroes Isabel & James one bed and furniture one side saddle to her & her heirs. ITEM. I give to my Daughter Molly Hamlin two Negroes Patt & Valentine one bed and furniture one side saddle to her & her heirs. ITEM. I give to my Son Charles Hamlin two Negroes Urse & Solomon one bed and furniture to him & his heirs. Item. I give to my Son John Hamlin two Negroes Sett & Mingo one bed & furniture one desk & fifty pounds money to him & his heirs. My stock to be divided among my three Sons before mentioned and the remainder of my Negroes to be divided among my six children before mentioned. I desire there may be no appraisement of my Estate. I appoint my Wife Sarah Hamlin & William Hamlin, Jesse Hargrave Micajah Bailey Executors of this my last Will & Testament, as Witness my hand this the eighth day of January one Thousand seven hundred & seventy three. The within written last Will and Testament of Stephen Hamlin deceased was presented into Court by William Hamlin & Jesse Hargrave two of the Executors therein named who made affirmation thereto as the law directs (they being of the Sect called Quakers) & the same was proved by the affirmation of James Stanton Nathaniel Briggs & Jesse Hargrave the witnesses thereto they also being Quakers, and by the Court ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said Executors certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form, giving security, whereupon they with Michael Bailey & Sampson Stanton their securitys entered into & acknowledged their bond in the penalty of three thousand pounds conditioned as the law directs.
