IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Edward Pettway of the Parish of Albermarle and County of Sussex being weak and sick but of sound disposing mind and memory praised be God do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following First and principally I bequeath my soul to Almighty God that gave it and as for what worldly Estate it hath pleased the Lord of his great mercy to bestow upon me I give and dispose of as follows, to wit- I GIVE and devise to my Son William my silver watch. ALSO I GIVE and devise to my Son John and his heirs forever one hundred acres of land more or less that I purchased of Thomas Oliver on the south side of Nottoway River also one hundred acres of land more or less on the North side of Nottoway River that I purchased of Susannah Eppes Robert Pettway & Mary his wife to him and his heirs forever. ALSO I GIVE and devise to my Daughter Phebe and her heirs my three Negroes Davie Tom, that I purchsed at Richard Laniers sale for the life of Mrs. Ann Lanier and a Negro man Abraham after the death of Mrs. Mary Harrison. ALSO I GIVE and devise to my Daughter Susannah wife of Edward Pettway my three Negroes Usse, Jack, and Charles, to her and her heirs forever likewise one fourth part of my crop. ALSO I GIVE and devise to my Daughter Elizabeth and her heirs my four Negroes Jimme J. purchased of Benjamin Harrison Esq. Sanco, Judge and Amie also one feather bed and furniture eight head of nett cattle six pewter dishes six pewter plates six table knives and forks six rush bottom chairs twenty pounds current money and one fourth part of my crop. ALSO I GIVE and devise to my son Edward and his heirs forever my lot No. 23 in Robert Ravencroft Lottery also my seven Negroes Will, Joe, Sue, Hanah, Marah, Agge and Epharim also half my stock of horses mares cattle sheep hoggs and fowls not otherwise devised also half my household furniture kitchen furniture lumber, books, plantation tools and utinsels. ALSO I GIVE and devise to my son Robert and his heirs forever my two pair of mill stones my still and furniture belonging to ___ also all the money that I may have in the house likewise all the money due and owing to my estate by judgement bonds notes or open accounts half my stocks of horses, mares, cattle, sheep, hoggs and fowls and half of my crop of all kinds half my household furniture kitchen furniture lumber books, plantation tools and utinsels. I ALSO GIVE and devise to my said Son Robert and his heirs forever my nine Negroes Peter, Tab, Cate, Tom, Sarah, Ben, Cuffie, Phillis, Lesse. I ALSO GIVE and devise to all and every of the legatees and their respective heirs all the issue of the female Negroes to them devised that may be born from the date of this will to my death. Also my will and desire is that all my just debts and funeral expences be paid out of my crops or household furniture as also my Daughter Elizabeth's twenty pounds current money her pewter knives and forks and cattle before a division also her chairs. I also constitute and appoint my two sons Edward and Robert to be whole and sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament and desire this my Estate may not be appraised. IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this tenth day of February one thousand seven hundred and seventy three. The last Will and Testament of Edward Pettway deceased was presented in Court by Edward Pettway one of the Executors therein named who made oath thereto as the law directs and the same was proved by the oaths of George Anderton and Precilla Wallice two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said Executor certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
