Will of John Sammons (Will Book B, page 90, Sussex Co.VA.) IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, the Twentyeth day of July, in the year of our Lord Christ One Thousand seven hundred & Sixty five I JOHN SAMMONS of Sussex County, being of sound & disposing mind & memory (thanks be to God for the same) & calling to mind the certainty of death & the uncertainty of this Transitory life do make constitute & ordain this my last will & testament in manner following (that is  to say) First I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it me hoping for salvation through the merits of my blessed redeemer (Jesus Christ) and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned; and as for my worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with after my just debts are paid, I give & dispose of as follows. IMPRIMIS I lend unto my loving wife LUCRETIA SAMMONS during her natural life all that part of my land & the plantation whereon I now live that lies above the Great branch next above my mothers, supposed to be about Thirty Acres. I also lend unto my said wife all my stocks of horses, cattle & hogs & houshold furniture during her natural life. After that my just debts are paid. And my further will & desire is that after my wifes death the said tract or parcel of land so lent unto her shall be sold together with the personal estate (if any) by my Executors or the surviving one of them or their heirs, for the best price that can be had for the same & the money ariseing from such sale to be equally divided amongst my loving children which shall be then living. ITEM  I give & bequeath unto my Friend CAPTAIN HENRY GEE, & to his heirs & assigns forever, all that part of my tract or parcel of land that lies above where I now live which I bought of MAJOR TILLER it being Thirty nine Acres the said HENRY GEE having already paid me a full consideration for it & if he shall not be satisfied with this devise, I do desire & do hereby require that my Executor or Executors may give him his heirs or assigns a deed for the same. ITEM  I do hereby authorise impower & direct that my Executors or Executor do sell all that part of my tract or parcel of land whereon my mother now lives that lies below the Great branch next above my Mothers, supposed to be about forty five acres with the appurtenances thereunto belonging for the best price that can be got for it & the money arising from the sale thereof to be first applyed to the discharge of my just debts & that my executors do make over & convey the said land by a sufficient deed or deeds for that purpose to any person who shall purchase the same. AND LASTLY I do hereby nominate and appoint my loving Friends DAVID MASON & ROBERT SEAT my whole & sole Exceutors of this my last will & testament hereby revoking & disannulling all former wills & bequests by me heretofore made; & do declare this & no other to be my last Will & Testament. The last Will & Testament of JOHN SAMMONS decd was presented into Court by DAVID MASON one of the Executors therein named who made oath thereto as the law directs & the same was proved by the oaths of HENRY TUDER JUNIOR & JOSEPH HARRIS two of the witnesses thereto & by the Court ordered to be recorded & on the motion of the said Executor Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
