Tazewell County, Virginia, Cemeteries: Maplewood Cemetery Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Woodie Beavers Mullins *******In the Witten Section, there is a big round grindstone erected and written on it is: Three miles west of this spot, Thomas Witten built the first home in this section in 1767, 33 years before the formation of Tazewell County. When Indian troubles began in 1772, he built Crabapple Fort, which was used by early settlers as a refuge. A Great Grandson Thomas Witten, erected Witten Mills in 1872. It was in turn owned by his son Alex, who used this millstone for a period of 64 years.
