It is about one- fourth of the way up Deskins Mountain and is surrounded by hardwood trees. Its GPS coordinates are 370 04’ 21 N, 0810 40’ 17 W (UTM 17 440303E 4102878N). There is no road into the site. It is on private property, so permission should be obtained before entering. A pasture fence with an access gate encloses the site. This survey was conducted in 1980 by David McGuire Trayer and Eugene Phlegar White, both of whom are descendants of William Floyd McGuire and Angeline Phillips. The late Herman Mitchell, who grew up on Pounding Mill Branch and knew many of the people buried in the cemetery, assisted in the survey. Mr. Mitchell was able to fill in some of the informational voids resulting from unmarked graves and un- inscribed gravestones. Parenthetical notes to this listing were added by Trayer. Additional Comments: Twenty other graves of unidentified individuals were found in the cemetery. Tracy Belle McGuire Hoops drowned in a flash flood of Pounding Mill Branch in June 1901. Two of the un-marked graves adjacent to hers are thought to contain the bodies of the daughter and step-daughter that drowned with her, namely Fannie Louise Hoops and Annie Lizzie Hoops. Eleven of these unmarked graves are grouped together, and each is marked with a simple, un-inscribed field stone. Family members think these are the graves of eleven members of the Tate family who were neighbors of the McGuires. One of the graves is thought to be that of young John Tate, who drowned in the flash flood of 22 June 1901 while heroically trying to save Belle McGuire Hoops and her two daughters. Three of the un-marked graves are thought to contain James Conley, Mary Louise Carter Conley, and their son Robert Conley. These were the parents and brother of Mary Louise Conley McGuire, wife of Charlie McGuire. The identity of those buried in the other four graves is uncertain.
