Raleigh Tabor Cemetery, annotated - Tazewell Co. VA RALEIGH TABOR CEMETERY & SOME HISTORY OF THE PARIS WITCHER WAGNER FAMILIY Location: In the *1940 to 1950’s Charles McClelland Wagner ‘s home stood where his parent’s home had been in earlier years. This cemetery is located about 1 mile from this home on Route # 643 across from the NEW Macedonia Methodist Church. Paris Witcher Wagner’s family is being added due to the fact the cemetery is close to where their wonderful old home stood, according to my mother, Hettie Marie (Shrader) Eagle. Charles M. Wagner’s parents were Paris Witcher Wagner & Patria Ann Perdue *The years I lived in the area. PARIS WITCHER WAGNER s/o Rev.Adam Edward Waggoner & Juliana Elinor Tabor. Mar 1891 daughter Hettie Marie Shrader Eagle, d/o Samuel Henry Shrader & Ocie Lee Tabor (Hettie is my Mother), remembers the lovely big white wood home this couple lived in at Mudfork, Tazewell Co VA. It was later torn down and Charles McClelland Wagner (The son of Paris and Patricia Perdue Wagner) built a large brick home in the very spot where it stood. Mom said when she and other young people walked to the OLD Macedonia Methodist Church from anywhere "on up" Mudfork, VA., they were always welcome to stop at Uncle Paris' & Aunt Patria’s and go to the spring house to get a drink of water. Mom tells of the hospitality of Patria (Perdue) Wagner. Everyone loved her. Patria had planted peonies (or as we called them -peony roses or in some areas they were called piney roses) all the way from the road to the house. Shades of pink, white and red paraded from the road to the front porch where you were always welcome to sit and rest. 1920 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS # 104 Falls Mills sec of Clearfork Dist PARIS W. Military, CSA (Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor, d., 18 Mar 1864 at Fort Delaware, Delaware, Union Prison Camp. s/o Richard Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia "Milly" Shrader. Husband of Sarah Ann "Suzy" Scott.) CIVIL WAR Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor was in Company "I", 16th Virginia Cavalry in the Civil War. Jefferson Tabor was in the 16th VA. Cav., that had been formed January 1862. He enlisted on Oct 9th 1862 in Tazewell Co., Va., by Wm. L. Graham, for a period of three years. This list shows that he had last been paid by Capt. Ward on Aug. 31, 1863. He was on the muster roll from Oct 31 1863, until April 1, 1864. Jefferson was captured in Wayne, WV., on Feb. 15th 1864. He was sent to the Louisville Military Prison and then to a military prison at Fort Delaware, Delaware. (This information from "Roll of Prisioners of War", dated in Louisville , Kentucky, Feb 29, 1864 - Provost Marshall Gen'l District of Louisville, Kentucky.) Next there is a "Prisoners of War" list from Fort Delaware, Del., Register No. 2 page 43., that lists Jefferson Tabor as dead. The final report is one that lists the prisoners of war who have died at Fort Delaware, Del., from March 16 to 31, 1864. This gives his death as March 20, 1864. and states his death was caused from an inflammation of the brain. The location of his grave was given as being on the Jersey Shore opposite the Fort Delaware prison which was/is at *Pea Patch Island. (Finns Point National Cemetery) In the information Michael Otis Tabor sent me he had this as the name of the cemetery. (Learned from a television program on the area I saw in 1999-Karen EAGLE Moman) The prison was located off shore on an island, Pea Patch Island, that was deserted but still standing in 1999. Regarding the tombstone: The company he served while in the Civil War is different in other sources than the one listed above. (I have found no explanation for that fact). I do not know if the family erected this stone as a family or if the government furnished it for his having died while serving in the C.S.A. Was his body moved there from NJ., or was this just in memory of one of two sons of Richard Adam & Mildred Permelia Tabor? If it was placed in memory why was there not one for Hugh "Hughie" Tabor who also died during the Civil War? Perhaps Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor’s widow had the stone put in place. Hugh "Hughie" Tabor was the brother of Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor. 2. RALEIGH TABOR.........................9-26-1884,........4-4-1954 (Raleigh Edward Tabor,s/o Charles W. "Charlie" Tabor & Amanda Jane Johnson. Raleigh and Martha Alice (Harman) Tabor never had children. Per Fannie Ellis Dickerson and Hettie Marie Shrader Eagle, Raleigh didn't marry until he was in his late 50's or early 60's. This wife committed suicide. I remember Raleigh Tabor from the Old Macedonia Methodist Church on Mudfork, VA., where I went as a child. He got up in church once and told the congregation if we were all nudists we would be better people. We wouldn't be able to judge others by the type of clothes they wore. It is a fact that this man was well loved by all the local people even though he was a little odd at times. When Solomon Pink Tabor, Sr., moved his family to the great white house at Mudfork, VA. (where the pavement ends on Route # 643- Falls Mills to Mudfork road), Raleigh Tabor was living in two rooms in the upstairs. Berkeley Kelly Tabor and his first wife, Dora Elizabeth Harry, had lived in this home until Dora died at the birth of Thelma Elizabeth Tabor, who was adopted by her aunt after her mom died. The aunt was Virginia 'Ginny' Melissa Tabor Bane, d/o Elgan Whitley Tabor & Octavia Zane Tiller.Thelma Elizabeth Tabor was always know as Elizabeth Bane and she married Basil Ballard, Sr. MARRIAGE: , bk., 6, page 52 Mercer Co., WV., Jun 2, 1934 Raliegh Edward Tabor to Martha Alice Harman 1920 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS # 98 Falls Mills Dist of Clearfork (this must have included Lower Mudfor) RALIEGH E.
