Graham was the first captain. After his promotion to the office of Colonel, and the division of the company into tow, First Lieutenant W. E. Peery, became Captain. This company, as will be seen, was made up of many of the county’s best known men. This list was compiled by Mr. S. F. Tabor (Samuel Flummer Tabor, s/o Daniel Tabor & Mary Martha Flummer), Falls Mills, now in his 86th year, and of the oldest survivors of this company, entirely from memory. He has forgotten many things as well as people, of his long life, but he retains a vivid and tender recollection of his old comrades of the dark days. As near as can be ascertained with certainty, 65 of the old comrades have answered the last roll call, of the original 125 names. We will let this list stand for a week in order to add additional names that may have been omitted. Send them to this office. "Keep Their Graves Green." List is published on 2nd page (A. W. W. TABOR-A WAR INCIDENT In connection with the publication of the roster of Co. I, in the paper, the following incident will be interesting: Mr. A. W. Tabor, Falls Mills, was perhaps the youngest member of the company, being about 17 years of age when he volunteered. He was captured at Moorefiled, West Virginia, * in 1864 and he tells his experience about as follows: (aka Kearnstown-per Michael Otis Tabor) "About a hundred of us were out on a short scouting trip, when, the first thing we knew we were among a lot of Yankee Cavalry—seemed to me about five thousand of ,. em. We broke down the road, as fast as our horses could go. The first thing I knew, I was pitching over my horse’s head, my horse was shot dead, and I thought I was dead, too. I felt blood running down my face. And then I didn’t remember anything else for some time, until I heard somebody holler, "halt." I looked around, and there was a big Yankee standing by me, with a big pistol pointing at me. I was out in an old field. It seems that when my horse fell I got up runnin’ and kept on runnin’, and perhaps would have been runnin’ yet if that Yankee hadn’t halted me. When I fell from my horse my head was the first place to hit the ground, cutting a great gash and dazing me so that I didn’t know anything, but I hadn’t forgotten how to run, you bet. My captor ordered me to give up my arms, and asked me who I was, and I told him I didn’t know. He asked me if I was shot, I told him I didn’t know, and he said I seemed to be able to run alright. Now what do you think that Yankee did? I’ll be dad-blamed if he didn’t get right down off his horse and told me to get up, as I wasn’t able to walk, and he walked beside me, leading the horse, and treated me just like a brother. Further on, he got up in front, and I rode behind him into camp, where I was treated with every consideration. In a day or two I slipped out and got away, and went back to my regiment. I halfway believe they didn’t care whether I got away or not. You may say what you please, but they were good kindhearted men on the other side. I never have forgotten the kindness of this Yankee soldier. He was a member of Indiana regiment, and I’d be the gladdest in the world to see him and thank him for his kindness to a soldier boy in trouble. If he is living I hope he is happy and prosperous, and if he is dead, that his soul is at peace and rest," and Alex took out his handkerchief and blew his nose. Many an old soldier can tell of similar kind treatment on the part of the enemy. Judge Graham, who was a member of this Company, tells an interesting story of how, when severely wounded he was kindly treated by his captors and everything possible done for him. We hope to get him to tell it for the benefit of our readers. Also, any other incidents by members of this or any other Company, will be interesting, and gladly published in this paper. Harrison TABOR I believe that Harrison Tabor and Henry Tabor are the same man, Henry Harrison Tabor , 1841 to 1892, who was known by all the close citizens and by his kin as Harrison Tabor. He was the youngest child of s/o Jesse & Susanna (Turner) Tabor. Susanna (Turner) Tabor died at the time of the birth of Henry Harrison Tabor. Harrison Tabor married Mary Margaret Butt, a d/o William Harrison Butt & Lucelia Elizabeth Harris. All the children of Jesse & Susanna Tabor were raised by their kin. Jesse Tabor died in 1842. 1830 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS JESSE TABOR 2 males 0-5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40 1 female 20-30, 1 female 60-70 (This female, 60-70, is unknown to me) 1840 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS JESSE TABER (WHERE ARE ALL THESE OTHER SONS? 8 SONS IN 1840!) 3 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 2 males10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50 1 female 40-50 There are five or six sons (depending on whether Jesse Tabor is a son) in the Jesse & Susanna Tabor family unit that I have never found. I know about; Jesse, b. abt 1810 (which I can not prove that he is their son) as he apparently died before 1850, Alva Francis Tabor, b. abt 1830, and Henry Harrison Tabor. Where are the other sons? H. J. TABOR I believe the H. J. Tabor and the Jeff Tabor, in the "Annals of Tazewell County Virginia" was the same man. Henry Jefferson 'Jeff" Tabor. B. abt 1830 to 18 March 1864, s/o Richard Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia 'Millie' Shrader, a d/o Henry Shrader, Sr., and his second wife, Louisa Kennedy. Henry Jefferson Tabor married Sarah Ann/Adeline 'Suzy' Scott a d/o William Scott and a wife named Eleanor (unknown surname. When Albert/Elbert A.Tabor. Sr., (a kinsman of Henry J. Tabor) was killed in the Civil War William Scott married his widow, Matilda D. (Payne) Tabor. Henry J. Tabor died at the Ft. Delaware prison, located on Pea Patch Island, in Delaware. He enlisted in the army on Oct 9th 1862 in Tazewell Co., Va., by Wm. L. Graham, for a period of three years. A military record showed that Captain Ward had paid him last on Aug. 31, 1863. He was on the muster roll from Oct 31 1863, until April 1, 1864. Jefferson was captured in Wayne, WV., on February 15, 1864. He was sent to the Louisville Military Prison and then to a military prison at Fort Delaware, Jackson County, Delaware. (This information from "Roll of Prisoners of War", dated in Louisville, Kentucky, February 29, 1864 - Provost Marshall General District of Louisville, Kentucky.) On a "Prisoners of War" list from Fort Delaware, Delaware, Register No. 2, page 43, Jefferson Tabor is listed as dead. The final report on H. Jefferson Tabor was one that listed the prisoners of war that died while at Fort Delaware, Delaware, from March 16 to 31, 1864. This gave his death as March 20, 1864, and stated that his death was caused from an inflammation of the brain. The location of his grave was given as being located on the Jersey Shore opposite the Fort Delaware prison. * The name of the cemetery is Finns Point National Cemetery. An added bit of data regarding Henry Jefferson Tabor: There is a tombstone in the Raleigh Tabor Cemetery at Mudfork, Tazewell Co., VA., for Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor. The company he served while in the Civil War is not the same as the one listed above. (I have found no explanation for that fact). The stone: Jefferson Tabor 1831-1864 Co., B., 86th Reg. Military, CSA. I do not know if the Tabor family or an organization erected this stone or if the government furnished it for his having died while serving in the C.S.A. Was this stone placed by Richard & Permelia (Shrader) Tabor in memory of one of their two sons that lost their lives during the Civil War. If that was the case why is there no stone for Hugh "Hughie" J. Tabor who also died during the Civil War? Perhaps Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor’s widow had the stone put in place. Sarah "Suzy" Ann Scott Tabor is also buried in the Raleigh Tabor Cemetery. There is conflicting information as to where Henry Jefferson Tabor was captured: 1. From "The 16th Virginia Cavalry," by Jack L. Dickinson: This text listed the place of Henry Jefferson Tabor’s capture as Laurel Creek in Wayne Co., VA/WV where he was taken prisoner with 38 other men. 2. Data from Cathy Merritt: Cathy saw information that Henry Jefferson Tabor was captured at Gettysburg on 7-4-63. Henry TABOR I believe to be the same man as Henry Harrison Tabor? See data above.
