REGARDING THE CIVIL WAR: From "History of Tazewell County and Southwest Virginia 1748-2920" By Pendelton. pg. 652 & 654. " If there is a neighborhood in Tazewell County that deserves a separate page in history for the part it took, and the sacrifice it made, in the Civil War, it is the section of the country around Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., VA., inside of a radius of two miles." " There were thirty-seven men from this section who went into the Confederate Army; most of them small farmers or the sons of small farmers, two of them were mechanics - there was but one man among them that who belonged to the slaveholding class." "These men were scattered among eleven different regiments. Eleven of them belonged to the 16th Va. Cav., six to the 29th Va. Inf., six to the 50th Va. Inf., five to the 8th Va. Cav., two to the 23 Bat. Va. Inf., two to the 45th Va. Inf., one to the 4th Va. Inf., Stonewall Brigade, one to the 24th Va Inf., one to the 54th Va. Inf., one to the 51st Va. Inf., and one to the 13th Bat. Va.Res. Inf." "Eight of these men were killed in action, five of them died of disease in the service, and thirteen of them were wounded, making a total casualty list of twenty-six, which equals a fraction over seventy per cent of all those in the service." "The Tabor relatives on this list were: Elbert Tabor, 16th Va. Cav., killed near Wayne, VA/WV., Jan .,1864 Andrew Tabor, 16th Va. Cav. , killed at Moorefield, Aug. 7, 1864 John A. Tabor, 50th Va. Inf., wounded at Chancellorsville, May 1864 Thomas E. Tabor, 29th Va. Inf. Henry Tabor, 45th Va. Inf., wounded at Fayette C. H., Sept. 1862 W.J. Tabor, 16th Va. Cav., There were five Dudley men: Ransom Dudley, 4th Va. Inf., wounded (lost arm), Gettsyburg, July , 1863 Frank Dudley, 8th Va. Cav. James Dudley, 8th Va. Ca., A. J. Dudley, 8th Va. Cav., William Dudley, 29th Va. Inf., died in Summer of 1862. Also in this group was Daniel Wagner, 45th Va. Inf., died in 1861." "The casualties sustained by the troops from all over the Northeast corner of Tazewell county were almost as great as those sustained by the Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., VA., neighborhood. Many of these men died of typhoid fever, among them were Trigg Tabor, Augustus Tabor, Hugh Tabor and Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor (died in prison ), Wm. Dillion." My note: All of these Tabor men were either first cousins or brothers, as were Trigg Tabor and Augustus Tabor, sons of Daniel Tabor and Mary Martha "Polly" Phlummer/Flummer Tabor, and Hugh (J.) Tabor and Jefferson Tabor, sons of Richard Adam Tabor and Mildred Parmelia "Milly" Shrader Tabor. Daniel and Richard, their fathers, were brothers. "History of Tazewell Co VA and SW VA 1748-1920" By Pendleton. Page 654. "There was an unfortunate condition of affairs that prevailed in the extreme Northeast corner of Tazewell Co., VA., during the last year of the Civil War. A few soldiers from that section were at home, absent from the army without leave. Two factions sprang up among them, and the result was a bitter feud in which four men lost their lives, Mark Perdue, a well behaved harmless young man, was the first victim of the feud. The next men killed were John Fletcher and Osborne Dillon. The last was Samuel Hamill, who lost his life about the time the war ended." Five of these were William Jasper Tabor, James Russell Tabor, Samuel Flummer Tabor, John Tabor and Augustus S. Tabor. William Jasper and James Russell Tabor were the sons of Richard Tabor & Mildred Permelia "Milly" (Shrader) Tabor whom had already had two sons killed , Henry Jefferson "Jeff' Tabor and Hugh "Hughy" J. Tabor. The other three Tabor's I have listed were the sons of Daniel Tabor & Mary "Polly" Martha (Phlumer/Flummer) Tabor whom had also had two sons killed in the Civil War. Daniel's two sons were: William W. Tabor who was the first of Daniel's sons to join was killed at Big Sulpher Springs in September 1861, and Daniel Trigg Tabor who died 29 December 1861.) Daniel Tabor had SEVEN SONS in the Civil War. I have a Jesse Tabor b. abt 1810? who was dead before 1850 and had been married to Elizabeth Holstine. Elizabeth is living with her parents in Mercer Co., VA/WV., in 1850 but George O. Tabor is not listed. George O. Tabor married Olivia Worrell. Several children are listed for George O. Tabor and Olivia Worrell. I do not know who the father of this Jesse Tabor was so I have put him with Jessee Tabor & Susanna (Turner) Tabor until I can find his biological parents. George O. & Olivia ‘s son James T. Tabor was b. in Galliher Co., OH., abt. 1864. He married Dolly Kissinger 25 Dec., 1883, in Mercer Co., WV. I. John Tabor enlisted in Company C, The Stone wall Brigade, 4th Regiment Va. Infantry in Newbern on March 17 ], 1862. He was listed as absent from muster , sick and at General Hospital . Records show him admitted to General Hospital in Farmville, VA. on sept. 5 1862, and released to active duty on Nov. 6 . The complaint was listed as diarrhea . He returned to active duty . His pay was $11.00 per month . John could sign his own name , for on the 22nd of December 1862, near Port Royal , VA., he signed a pay voucher for six months pay ; $66.00 . He served under Capt. Bosang. On May 3 1863, he was wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville . He had a leg amputated as a result of his wound, and died due to gangrene on July 23, 1863, in General Hospital No. 1 Richmond, Va. The regimental history of the 4th Va. Infantry lists John as being buried in Hollywood Cemetary, Richmond . A claim was filed on behalf of his wife, Lucinda for benefits . She received $94.36 . According to a description of him on a pay voucher he was 6' tall, had blue eyes, light hair, and fair complexion . (John Tabor, s/o John Tabor who was the s/o William & Nelly, & Elizabeth. His,this Civil War John Tabor, wife was Lucinda Elkins). II. Phillip Tabor (Phillip was b. 1844) was also a member of the 4th Infantry. He enlisted in Company L at Blacksburg on July 16 , 1861, five days before the first battle of Bull Run, though it appears that his company didn't arrive in camp till August so he probably wasn't in that battle . The muster . Phillip died on September 10 , 1861 , at General Hospital in Lynchburg . He was seventeen .(Phillip Tabor, s/o William Tabor & Susan (Harless) Tabor. I do not show a wife for Phillip Tabor). There were Fourteen Tabor men in the 16TH Virginia Cavalry during the war, most of them enlisted on the same date ; Oct. 9 1862. They are listed below: (This number (14) is counting Hugh J. Tabor, s/o Ricahrd Adam Tabor-if he was in the 16 or was he in the 8th VA Cav? If Hugh J. Tabor was in the 8 Va Cav., then the number is thirteen -13) III. (1) Alexander W. Tabor enlisted Co.I, 16th Cavalry , 6-4 1864 in Tazewell County . He was listed as absent till November of 1864 , sick . He appears on a list of P. O. W. s that signed the parole papers that all Confederate soldiers were required to sign at the end of the war agreeing to abide by the law and not to take up arms against the government . He signed the Parole on May 15 , 1865 at Charleston W VA. The description of him then was 18 years old , height 5' 8" , dark complexion , grey eyes , and black hair . (Alexander Waltham "Alex" Tabor, s/o Amos H. Tabor who was the son of Daniel Tabor & Mary Martha Flummer. Alex Tabor never married as far as I know). IV. (2) Andrew Jackson Tabor enlisted in Tazewell co. Va. Oct. 9 1862 Sergeant, Co. F, 16 Cav. He was killed in action at Moorfield , Va. Aug. 7 , 1864 . ( Son of James Tabor & Henrietta (Blackwell) Tabor. Andrew J. Tabor married Juliana Belcher and as far as I know she never remarried after his tragic death.) V. (3) Elbert A. Tabor enlisted at Tazwell Co. Va. Oct. 9 , 1862, private , Co. F , 16 Va. Cav. He was in the C. S. A. General Hospital from 8-28-63 to 9-9-63 for (illegible , brouch chro ? ) He was killed in action on Feb. 15 1864 , probably in Wayne Co. Va. Name spelled often as ALBERT TABOR. The name Albert and Elbert were interchangable. (Albert/Elbert A. Tabor, Sr., son of Nancy Elizabeth Tabor who later married Moses J. Belcher. At the death of Albert/Elbert A. Tabor his widow, Matilda Payne Tabor, married William Scott-William Scott’s daughter by a first marriage, Sarah A. "Suzy" Scott, married Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor). VI. (4) George W. Tabor , Private Co. I , 16th Va. Cav. , Enlisted 1-3-1863 , was transferred to Co. H , 45th Va. Inf. by way of exchange for John C. Lane on 3-21-1864 . He was in Charlottesville Hospital on 7-25-1864 . Listed as deserted on 5-4-1865 ( Lee had already surrendered by then at Appomatox ) and took the amnesty oath on that day . Resident of McDowell Co. WV. , age 21 , 5'8" tall , grey eyes , fair complexion. (Possible son of Abraham Tabor & Nancy Tabor. The other local George W. Tabor was the s/o Stephen H. Tabor & Anne Bechelhymer Tabor who was b. 1834 so he would not have been about age 21 at this time). VII.(5) Henry Jefferson "Jeff" Tabor enlisted Co. J , 16 Va. Cav. , private , Oct. 9 1862 in Tazewell . He was captured at Wayne Co. Va. on Feb. 15 , 1864 . He appears on a list of prisoners that arrived at the Louisville , Ky. Military Prison from Feb. 20 to 25 of 1864 . Henry was transferred to to Fort Delaware , Del. on March 7 1864 . He was reported dead on March 20 , 1864 . The cause was given as inflammation of the brain .Location of his grave given as on the Jersey coast opposite the prison . (Son of Richard Adam Tabor & Martha Permelia "Milly" (Shrader) Tabor. The prison was located off shore on an island, Pea Patch Island, that was deserted but still standing in 1999-I saw a segment on TV about this place-Karen).Henry Jefferson Jeff" Tabor was married to Sarah Ann "Suzy" Scott whose father , William, married the widow of Albert/Elbert A. Tabor, Sr. The widow of Albert Tabor, Sr., was Matilda Payne Tabor). VIII. (?) * Hugh Tabor Died in Civil War 14 Sept 1861. Son of Richard Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia "Milly" (Shrader) Tabor?? * MIGHT not have been in the 16th VA CAV (Hugh J. "Hughy" Tabor is a source of debate as to where he died, how he died, and WHAT COMPANY he served in during the Civil War. There are conflicting reports: 1. This list would suggest he was in the same unit as his brother, Henry Jefferson, Jeff" Tabor- 16th Virginia Cav…But what Company? 2. This is also a hint of the fact that he was in the unit of his brother, Henry Jefferson Tabor- Tabor "Annals of Tazewell County, Virginia", Vol II, page 245, Company "I" 16th Virginia Cavalry Roster, Vol II, Cavalry Regiments William Leander Graham, Captain. * Tabor, Jeff, died in prison at Ft. Delaware Tabor, H. J., died in prison (Was this Hugh J. "Hughy" Tabor? Son of Richard Adam Tabor? And what prison?). * See information from Phyllis Ann Tabor below that found a Hugh J. Tabor in the 8th VA Cav., and also the fact found on page 652 of "History of Tazewell County and Southwest Virginia 1748-1920" that stated five of the Tabor men is the Civil War from the Falls Mills area was in the 8th VA Cav Regiment . 3.From information found by Phyllis Ann Tabor Tabor- Tabor, Hugh J: pvt. Co. H Enlisted 7/25/1861 at age 23. Horse valued at $150. Probably from Taz. Co. This was taken from the 8th VA Cavalry Regiment Book written by Jack L. Dickenson This is the 8th Va Cav, not the 16th.. Other facts are fuzzy about the CAUSE & PLACE of his death: Repeated from above: 1. "History of Tazewell County and Southwest Virginia 1748-1920" page 652-654: " If there is a neighborhood in Tazewell County that deserves a separate page in history for the part it took, and the sacrifice it made, in the Civil War, it is the section of the country around Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., VA., inside of a radius of two miles." " There were thirty-seven men from this section who went into the Confederate Army; most of them small farmers or the sons of small farmers, two of them were mechanics - there was but one man among them that who belonged to the slaveholding class." "These men were scattered among eleven different regiments. Inf., died in 1861." "The casualties sustained by the troops from all over the Northeast corner of Tazewell County were almost as great as those sustained by the Falls Mills neighborhood. Many of these men died of Typhoid Fever, among them were: Trigg Tabor Augustus Tabor HUGH TABOR Jefferson Tabor ?died in prison Wm. Dilion Ransom Prunty David Crockett William Crockett Jordan Harless Charles McDowell Giles Parker Dennis Stowers Geo. Doughton Harrison Tiller David Workman Hugh Wilson This would seem to imply, to me, that this Hugh Tabor was Hugh J. "Hughy" Tabor, s/o Richard Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia "Milly" Shrader. The reason being that I do not know of another Hugh Tabor, of that area, in the Civil War, but it does not mention his place of death as it does that of his brother, Jefferson Tabor. (Henry Jefferson ‘Jeff’ Tabor). I realize the implication is made that many died of Typhoid Fever-but not all of them. 2. "Tazewell County Death Register" DEATH: page 43-44, Line # 21 Hugh J. Tabor, W/M, died Sept 14 1861 at Tazewell Co., VA of pneumonia fever at the age of 22 years, s/o Richard and Milly Tabor. Hugh was b. Tazewell Co., VA., his death reported by Milly Tabor, mother 3. From Phyllis Ann Tabor: Death Reg. pg. 20 Tazewell Co., Va. Courthouse Hugh J. Tabor white free male D. Sept 14, 1861 Taz. Co.,Va of pneumonia fever 22yrs. Parents: Richard & Millie Tabor pob. Taz. Co., Va. occ. soldier single According to this, he did not die in prison, but in Taz.Co., Va-Phyllis I think it is safe to assume Hugh J. "Hughy" Tabor did die of Pneumonia- but which company is correct? Did he die in prison or Tazewell Co., VA? IX. (6) James Tabor enlisted in Tazwell , Co.F , 16 Va. Cav. Oct. 9 1862 , pvt. He was captured in Tazewell on May 9 , 1864 , and sent to Camp Chase , Ohio and transferred to Point Lookout on 2-12-1865. He was paroled on Feb. 12 1865 . James was admitted to Chimbrazo Hospital in Richmond for debility Feb. 21 1865 , remarks "paroled prisoner" .He stayed thirty days . He signed the general parole papers on June 22, 1865 . His description was ; age 22 , 6' tall , dark complexion , Black eyes , black hair . (By process of elimination there are only three James Tabors from our area of Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., VA this could have been: 1. We know it was not James Russell Tabor, b. 1834, as he is chronicled as James Russell Tabor and accounted for in this list. 2. James A.Tabor, b. about 1828, s/o Jessee Tabor & Susanna Turner. 3. James Harrison Tabor, b. 1821, s/o James Tabor & Henrietta Blackwell. I have no knowledge of James Harrison Tabor as a Civil War Soldier-can anyone help? There was a James Tabor, b. about 1816 born to Stephen H. Tabor & Anne Bechelhymer but he died in 1853 in Carter Co., KY as far as I know. X. (7) James Russell Tabor enlisted Oct. 9 1862 , Tazwell , Co. F , 16 Va. Cav. , pvt. . He was listed as awol and as deserted on Sept. 28 , 1864 and droppedfrom the company rolls . He signed the federale parole on June 23 , 1865 .Age was 30 , 5' 9" tall, complexion light , blue eyes , sandy hair . (Son of Richard Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia "Milly" (Shrader) Tabor. He married Martha Jane Havens-known as Jane). XI. (8) John Tabor, private , enlisted in Co. J , 16th Va. Cav. on 1-20-1863 , Tazewell county .He was captured at Gettysburg on July 1 , 1863 , and was in U. S. A. Hospital on July 25 with debilitas . He was tansferred to West Bldg. U. S. A. General Hospital , Baltimore , Md. John was paroled there on September 25 , 1863 . He was admitted to Chimbrazo Hospital , Richmond on 9-28-1863 for rhuematism , and fulouged for 20 days on October 10 . John was listed as absent on muster rolls on 10-31-1864 and deserted on the next muster, but was listed on other muster rolls as "absent on parole of honour " . He signed the amnesty papers at the end of the war on 6-24-1865 . Description ; age 39 , 6' tall , fair complexion , blue eyes , dark hair . (By process of elimination I have these six John Tabors: 1. John Tabor, b. abt 1830, s/o Whitley Jacob Tabor & Elizabeth Schell/Shell-Not this John Tabor because I think he would have joined closer to Montgomery Co., VA 2. John A. Tabor, s/o James Tabor & Henrietta Blackwell-Not this James Tabor because I think he is below as the John Tabor who joined in Giles Co., VA 3. John Andrew Tabor, s/o James Harriosn Tabor & Henrietta Blackwell.- I have no knowledge of him having been in the Civil War. Does anyone know? 4. John Henry Tabor, b. abt 1831-I have no knowledge of this son of Francis Tabor & Mary Shrader but the found the at the Mormon Library. No other information at that time as to a wife or descendants. 5. John T. Tabor, s/o Daniel & Mary Tabor-Not this John Tabor as he is listed below and aaccounted for per Michael Otis Tabor. 6. John Tabor, b. 1827, s/o John Tabor & Elizabeth. This John Tabor is accounted for as the first name on the list I do not know if this is a John Tabor I know nothing about or of he could have been one of the several sons of Jessee Tabor & Susanna Turner that is lost in history-Karen XII. (9) Russel B. Tabor shown in post war records as a private in Co. I,16th Cav. (Son of Daniel Tabor & Mary Martha Phlummer/Flummer Tabor -Two of their sons died in the Civil War. Russell B. Tabor married Elizabeth "Betsy’ Compton). XIII. (10) John Tabor enlisted on 20 January 1863, in Tazewell County, VA., as a private in Company "I" 16th Regiment of the Virginia Calvary. He was described as 6' tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He served as a captain in the Battle of Gettysburg and was captured by the Federals 1 July 1863. He was in the USA Hospital suffering with Debiltas and was transferred to the Baltimore, MD., hospital 10 August 1863. He was later paroled. (John T. Tabor, b.1827, son of Daniel Tabor & Mary Martha Phlummer/Flummer Tabor . John T. Tabor married Elizabeth Crockett). XIV.(11) Samuel Flummer Tabor enlisted in Tazewell Oct . 9 1862 , pvt. Co. J , 16 Cav. He signed parole papers on June 23 1865 . Age 44 , 5' 6" tall , dark complexion , blue eyes , auburn hair . (Son of Daniel Tabor & Mary Martha Phlummer/Flummer Tabor . Samuel Tabor married Charlotte Osburn). XV. (12) Stephen Harrison Tabor enlisted Oct. 9 1862 , Tazwell , Co. I , 16 Va. Cav. AWOL on 10-31-1864 , present and in arrest 12-31-1864 . Description age 34, dark complexion , 5'5" tall , auburn hair. (William Jasper Tabor, son of Richard Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia "Milly" Tabor.I have NEVER seen the son of Franics & Mary Tabor’s son listed as William Jasper Tabor-however, his name could also have been William Jasper Tabor. This William Jasper tabor was married three times: 1. Sarah E. Bruce 2. Minerva Jane (Stinson) Reynolds 3. Emma Wheeler 29th Virginia Infantry XVII. Augustus Tabor 29th Va Infantry C.S.A. regimental history lists Augustus Tabor as enlisted on 4-2-1862, Co. I, present 6-62, awol 8-5-62, dropped from rolls in 1863. ( In the photocopied material sent to me by Marion Joseph "Joe" Tabor I have found this extra data. However, it does not help to identify Augustus Tabor. All MIGHT be the same man and it is POSSIBLE all are for Augustus S. Tabor listed below. There are seven more doucments, of Augustus Tabor, I will not type that are apparently for the same Augustus and two for A.S. Tabor -Karen 1. 17th VA Cav ?Augustus Tabor, Pfc. Capt. Jacob C. His unit may have been quartered in Dublin . * He was admitted on 6-10-1864 to C.S.A. Geneneral Hospital for debility and released the next day . A muster roll dated 10/ 30/ 1864 lists him as captured in battle at Winchester on 9-19-1864 . Before his death, he wrote letters in which he tells of a battle he was in at Gauley in Greenbrier Co., VA/WV. It was during this battle that the Confederates suffered large losses of men and heavy losses of horses, wagons, cattle, coffee, sugar, rice, salt and meal.. In addition to that the Confederate Commander, General John Buchanan Floyd was wounded. William said he was standing guard duty and was tired of army life and wished he were home again where he could get something good to eat because he wasn't getting it in the army. William's estate was settled after his death. It appears he owned only a note from his brother, Charles T., for the amount of $173.00. William's brother-in-law, Isaac Q. Moore, served as administrator of his estate).
