Article from Adria, 1906 - Tazewell Co. VA Clinch Valley News J. A. Leslie, Editor Tazewell, VA Established 1845 Published Each Friday CVN NOV 1906 Friday, November 23, 1906 Two Deaths Near Adria Adria, Nov 22 Mr. Clinton Banner, a young man, died of consumption at the home of his mother, Mrs. Godsey, early last Monday morning. The burial took place on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ragus Sluss lost their 6-month old baby boy last Friday morning of diphtheria. (Rages Maroni Sluss, Sr., brother of Margaret Rebecca Sluss who married Hugh Edward Tabor and Corrilda Alice Sluss who married Rufus Jackson Shrader. Rages Sluss was a well know Civil Engineer who married Nancy Atelia "Nannie" Litz, d/o John Tiffany Litz & Elizabeth Emily Thompson. The child that died was Arthur Goodwin Sluss, b. 28 April 1906 d. 15 Nov 1906). Rages & Nancy Sluss had 13 children. The public at Adria, taught by Miss Annie Rhudy, has been almost broken up by whooping cough. The attendance is very small this month. (I believe this to be Cynthia Anne "Annie" Rhudy, d/o Peter Alexander Rhudy & Margaret Elizabeth Taylor. Annie married Paris George Shrader, s/o William Louis "Billy" Shrader & Letitia "Lettie" George. Paris George Shrader & Annie were married 26 Dec 1907 in Tazewell Co., VA. Paris George Shrader, grand son of Henry Shrader, Sr., & Louisa Kennedy and a cousin of Mildred Permellia Shrader-wife of Richard Adam Tabor and Mary Shrader-wife of Francis Shrader. The parents of Paris George Shrader are James Britton Shrader & Mary "Polly" Day . Three Day sisters married Shrader men: 1. Mary Day married James Britton Shrader 2. Edith Belle "Edy" Day married John Henry Shrader, Jr 3. Christina Epperson Day married John Lewis Shrader- of the Peter Shrader line. Peter a brother of Henry Shrader, Sr., and David "Dave" Shrader, Sr. Other siblings of this family married into many Tazewell Co., VA families and then their children to Shrader/Tabors/ Belchers, etc.). Friday, November 30, 1906 J. D. Tabor, of Bluestone, called in recently to cast his votes. "Jake, " like his brother "Alex, " at Falls Mills, has so far, escaped the snares and traps set for him by Cupid, and seems to be happy in a state of single blessedness. Like Esan, these old bachelors will repent some day, but find, perhaps, "no place of repentance." (Jacob D. "Jake" Tabor and Alexander Waltham Tabor, sons of Amos H. Tabor and Cynthia McPherson. Amos H.. Tabor a son of Daniel Tabor). Alexander Waltham Tabor, b. 26 April 1848, d. 5 July 1912 Jacob D. "Jake" Tabor, b. 18 March 1850, d. 20 May 1926 I have no idea who Esan was, as referred to in this article. If it was supposed to be Esau I do not understand since Esau sold his birthright, to his twin brother, Jacob, for a mess of pottage/porridge. If I ever get back to Tazewell Co., VA I am going to see if J. A. Leslie, the editor of the Clinch Valley News, during this era was a Mason. I personally think all of this is good-natured banter between the brothers of this order. Friday, November 30, 1906 Mr. Ragus Sluss, who lives on Cavatt’s Creek, has had several cases of diphtheria in his family, losing his smallest boy; the others are reported now out of danger, and improving.
