Article from Bailey, 1902 - Tazewell Co. VA Clinch Valley News Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Established 1845 Published Each Friday Cost-$1.00 per year in advance April 25, 1902 BAILEY (Special Correspondent) Bailey, April 21- John Moore died Friday of last week. And was buried on Saturday in the family burying ground, on the farm. John was about 21 or 22 years old, and was the youngest child of Samuel L. Moore, who is well known to many readers of the News. He died of consumption. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Mullins of Eastern Abbs Valley, visited Mrs. Mullin’s father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Karr, Sunday and today, returning home this evening. 1900 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS # 204 Clear Fork Dist., W. L. Stephens, enumerator GILLES S. KARR (sic), 56, b. Apr 1897, dau IN 1928 when Giles Rufus Karr died his name was still being spelled as Karr. I have found the name as Carr, Karr and Kerr. Perhaps this branch of the family kept the spelling as Karr rather than Americanizing it to Carr. G. R. Carr was listed as an official member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Graham. Tazewell Co., VA. O. H. Logan was the minister. Other members were: C. A. Wagoner C. M. Wagoner G. M. Wagoner J. G. Bailey Moore Compton E. E. Hale J. M. Hale Miss Stella Tabor J. H. Tabor You can see by these names how well the Compton/Hale/ Tabor/Wagner families knew the Carr’s. Giles Rufus Carr served in the Civil War for the Confederate States of America/CSA. (Remember the name Carr , Karr and Kerr were interchanged in this era. I believe this to have been Giles Rufus Carr, s/o Robert & Sarah Carr. Robert Carr was the s/o John, b. about 1750-1770 & Margaret Carr. Another son of John & Margaret was John Carr, born about 1798and he married Sarah Hoge and one of their sons, Daniel Hoge Carr, was the beloved Dr. Rev. D. H. Carr that ministered to so many of our Tazewell Co., VA ancestors. He was a Methodist minister. Rev. Daniel Hoge Carr married Sarah Jane Bane, daughter of William Russell Bane and Nancy Havens. Nancy Havens, the daughter of Howard Havens & Martha Davidson, the granddaughter of the well know pioneer of Tazewell Co., VA John Goolman Davidson and his wife Martha. Marriage of Daniel Hoge Carr: Tazewell Co., VA., 27 Mar 1860: Daniel H. Carr was 21 years 8 months and 15 days, born in Giles Co VA 1838. He was the son of John & Sarah Cain (sic) ?should be Carr. Sarah Jane Bane was 18 years and 13 days. d/o W. R. & Nancy Bane. Married by G. W. Miles. Groom now a resident of Mercer Co VA/WV Data from the Journal of the Revered Doctor Daniel Hoge Carr that was found in storage at the First United Methodist Church of Bluefield, Tazewell Co., VA., and information from his obituary in the 1928 Holston Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, has been used for some baptism, death, and marriage datesof which most being from the old records of the Macedonia Methodist Church at Mudfork, Tazewell Co., VA., reprinted in the "Tazewell County Historical Society Newsletter , Volume # 7, Number 3", September 1994. Dr. Rev. Daniel Hoge Carr was born in Giles Co., VA., on Walker’s Creek near White Gate on July 12, 1838. When a small boy his parents moved to Mercer Co., VA., -now WV, near Glenwood Park close to the New Hope Church. Dr. Carr maintained a home there until his death on May 17, 1927. Rev. Daniel Hoge Carr & Sarah Jane Bane had four daughters and one son: Mrs L. B. Bratton (Nannie E. married Lewis Benjaimin Bratton, 23 Oct 1883) Mrs. C. H. Settle Mrs. Jacob Wall Douthat Mrs. (Rev) D.T. Miles Dr. S. E. Carr. Rev. D. H. Car served the OLD Macedonia Methodist Church at Mud Fork from 31 October, 1882, October 1885. His active ministry crisscrossed the Holston Conference and he will be remembered for being the prime mover in the building of the Trinity Church in Bluefield, Mercer Co., WV., where his wife was a charter member and remained until her death. The church named a stained glass window in their memory and after his death, by the order of the Conference, the auditorium of the Sunday School was named "The Daniel Carr Chapel"). Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Tabor, of Pocahontas, are visiting Mrs. Tabor’s father and mother, Mrs. J. T. Moore, as they expect to leave Pocahontas and go to Williamson, W.Va. This seems to be a farewell (for a while) visit. (I had only known of two Dr. Tabors until I started researching the Clinch Valley News . It is amazing how our families history is being found within its pages. This new found source of data is bringing our ancestors alive for us and future generations. The two doctors I knew of were Dr. McHenry Tabor, son of George O. Tabor & Olivia "Ollie" Worrell, and Dr. Sidney J. Tabor, son of Russell B. Tabor & Elizabeth Compton. However, I believe the initials are incorrect in this article because Dr. Sidney J. Tabor married Ora V. Moore and her father was James T. Moore and his wife was Sarah A.W. ?unknown surname. I can not find a Dr. J. B. Tabor in my files. Can anyone help or do you think the initials are incorrect? In a recent article of the News Alexander Waltham Tabor was also listed as a doctor). Miss Mary Wagner was riding down this valley yesterday evening, and as she got near the home of Rev. J. W. Holbrook, her horse was frightened at something, whirled around and jumped suddenly, and we are told the second jump before the rider fell, but she did not fall on her back at the second jump of the animal. Dr. Reynolds was called in as soon as possible. He thinks she is badly but not seriously hurt. She is not able to be moved and is still at Rev. Holbrooks. (I know that Rev. J .W. Holbrooks was Rev. James W. Holbrook, son of Randall/Randolph Holbrook & Mary H. "Polly" Wagner Holbrook. Rev. J. W. Holbrook married Christina Margaret Shrader, daughter of John Henry Shrader, Jr., & Edith Belle "Edy’ Day. However, only by looking at the 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census will I make a guess at the Mary Wagner mentioned. The Wagner family that lived the nearest to Rev. J. W. Holbrook had no daughter named Mary. The closest Wagner family was a couple my mom, Hettie Marie Shrader Eagle, dearly loved in her youth, Charles Alexander Wagner & Jane Annabelle "Annie" Bailey. Because my mom and the other young folks around Mud Fork often walked to Bailey I can believe that Mary Angie Wagner, daughter of Paris Witcher Wagner & Patria Ann Perdue would have ridden her horse to that area from Mud Fork. Therefore, I believe that Mary is Mary Angie Wagner). Patria is the correct name not Patricia for Patria Ann Perdue Wagner, another couple my mom cherished. Hettie Marie Shrader Eagle remembers the lovely big white wooden home Uncle Paris & Aunt Patria (as mom still refers to them) lived at Mudfork, Tazewell Co VA. The majestic old home that had sheltered so many travelers was later torn down and Charles McClelland Wagner, the son of Paris and Patria Ann Perdue Wagner, built a large brick home in the very spot where it stood. Mom said when she and other young people walked to the OLD Macedonia Methodist Church from anywhere "up Mudfork way" they were always welcome to stop at Uncle Paris' and go to the springhouse to get a drink of water. I have been told that the New Macedonia Methodist Church was built near this property. Mom Hettie also remembered the hospitality of Patria Perdue Wagner. Everyone dearly loved her. Patria had planted peonies, or as we called them -peony roses or in some areas they were called piney roses, all the way from the road to the house. Shades of pink, white and red paraded from the road to the front porch where you were always welcome to sit and rest. Miss Emma Hanshoe has a very sever attack of grip, but a little better at this writing. (To have been in Bailey I believe this was Emma J. Handshew born October 1882, and the daughter of Thomas & Martha V. Handshew. Actually my spelling of the surname might be incorrect). Mrs. Hounsell suffered severely some days ago with rheumatism in her right shoulder. Her arm was swollen to the ends of her fingers, but we are glad to repot her better now. (Might have been Julia A. Hounsell, born Feb. 1873 and the wife of A. Hounsell). A few days ago there was one day that was too wet to be out, so Hoge Wagner thought that while he was resting he would spend the time killing rats. He cleaned the smoke house of boxes, barrels and whatever else was in the way, and by the aid of Master R. A. Hounsell and his little dog Roscoe, they killed about forty-five, a few got away, but Hoge thinks if the day had been a good one for rat-killing they might have done better. Success to the News. (James Hoge Wagner, son of Charles Alexander Wagner & Jane Annabelle "Annie" Bailey. Robert A. Hounsell, born Dec 1890, and the son of A. Hounsell & Julia A. Hounsell).
