A. Leslie, Editor Established 1845 Published Each Friday Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA CVN FALLS MILLS, VA MARCH 8, 1901 Friday, January 11, 1901 Jas. A. Tabor, of Thompson’s Valley, passed through town today in company with his two daughters, Misses Ella and Kate, on their way to see his mother, Mrs. Tabor. (In my files the only James A. Tabor I have that fits, this window of time, is the son of Stephen Harrison Tabor & Lucinda Obedience Deaton. I have no children listed for James A. Tabor and his wife, Rose Lee O’Donnell married 12 July 1894 in Mercer Co., WV?also my kin from the David "Dave" Shrader, Sr., line as well as some of yours. Rose Lee O’Donnell, I had had for several years as O’Donald, until a direct descendant of the Isaac O’Donnell & Rebecca Shrader line told me that the name was O’Donnell not O’Donald. The name is found many ways in the early records. Another reason I believe this to be James A. Tabor s/o Stephen Harrison & Lucinda Tabor is the fact it stated he was on the way to visit his mother. That indicates to me his father was no longer living. Stephen Harrison Tabor died Dec. 19, 1890, according to my records). Friday, March 8, 1901 FALLS MILLS HAPPENINGS Bacon Thieves at Work Again, A Powder Keg Explosion Falls Mills, Va., March 6- Thieves entered the smokehouse of Joseph Shannon, on Bluestone on Saturday night, and took about four hundred pounds of bacon hams, then loaded them on his horses and took it as far as Elgin Tabors, on Mud Fork, where they turned Mr. Shannon’s horses loose and took Mr. Tabor’s, which they released at Flat Top Yards. The thieves are still at large. (I believe Joseph Shannon to be Jospeh B. Shannon, father of Laura Elizabeth Shannon who married Charles J. Hale and then they had a daughter, Virginia B. "Jennie" Hale who married Grover William Wagner-the s/o James Henry Wagner & Cassie Ellen Belcher. Elgin Tabor-Elgin Whitley Tabor, s/o Richard Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia "Milly" Shrader). The little child of J. A. Sarver, which we reported as being sick last week is much better. (I believe this to be John Sarver) Mrs. C. A. Carter, who has been sick for sometime, continues poorly. (Mrs. C. A.Carter-Sally Marrs the wife of Charles Albert Carter, whose daughter, Sue Carter married William McKinnley "Ken" Tabor, s/o Hugh Edward Tabor & Margaret Rebecca Sluss). We have a man in town who is so particular that he often gets out of bed to see if the toes of his shoes are turned the same way. L. J. Barbee has been indisposed for several days. (I believe this name might be Barber?) Mr. Winfrey, a foreman on Walton & Co’s, works at the quarry, who was badly burned by the explosion of a keg of powder, is very much improved. Wm. Dudley has moved his family from Bluefield to this place. (I am not certain if it was William Tabor Dudley, s/o James Craig Dudley & Mariah Elizabeth Tabor. William Tabor Dudley married a divorced Almeda Pennington on 15 June 1900, or if it was William E. Dudley, brother of James Craig Dudley. * I do not show William Tabor Dudley or William E. Dudley in the 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census. * Almeda Pennington first married to a Henry L. Carver on 31 May 1887). C. E. Buckland paid tazewell a flying visit Saturday. (Charles Edward Buckland, Sr). S. F. Tabor was in town one day last week. Uncle Sammy is in his eighty-first year and very active for one of his age, and is one of our best citizens. (Samuel Flummer Tabor, s/o Daniel Tabor & Mary Martha Phlummer/Flummer). Sam Marrs is a carpenter, blacksmith, stonecutter and, at times a scientific boxer. (I believe to be the s/o William Marrs & Levicie/Louisa "Vicy" Mitchell whose sister Dora/Nora B. Marrs married Thomas M. Carter who died bef 12 Aug 1898(. 1900 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS # 287 Clear Fork Dist., W. L. Stephens, enumerator DORA CARTER, 28, b. Nov 1871, VA (all in home b. VA) had had five children .....William, 9, b. July 1890, son .....Frank, 8, b. Mar 1892, son .....Lake, 6, b. Apr 1894, dau .....Hazle (sic), 3, b. Feb 1897, dau .....Jennette, 1, b. Jan 1899, dau JESS PENNINGTON, 22, b. Apr 1878, servant/farm labor SAM MARRS, 24, b. July 1875, Brother, postmaster Alex Tabor is attending to the Post Office. Lee Barber says he would do very well if he was not warped. (Alexander Waltham Tabor. We should apparently not take offence to that since it was some type of Falls Mills joke that can not be understood a hundred years later). Mrs. S. F. Tabor returned from a visit to her daughters in Summers County. (Charlotte "Lottie" Osburn, wife of Samuel Flummer Tabor. They had four daughters: 1. Arizona H. "Ora/Ari/Orr" Tabor, m. the first wife of Charles Edward Kinzer-a descendant of Richard Adam Tabor 2. Mary Slade Tabor, m. David R. Ramsey 3. Hattie L. Tabor, m. (?) 4. Laura Latecia Tabor, m. Tobias Smith Nilt I do not know which of the last three lived in Summers County but it was apparently NOT Arizona H. Tabor Kinzer. E. A. Deaton went to Radford Saturday on important business. (Edward A. Deaton, s/o Rev. Fabius Levi Deaton & Sarah Regina "Virginia" Shrader-a descendant of Henry Shrader, Sr., & Louisa Kennedy. W. B. Tabor, who has been sick for some time, is improving slowly. (I have a few W. B. Tabor’s of this window of time. However, due to geographical location, I believe this to have been William B. Tabor, s/o Thomas Edward Tabor, Sr., & Anna Elizabeth Parker . This William B. Tabor did not marry until November 4, 1908-in Tazewell Co., VA to Annie Jane Crawford. I wonder if they could have transposed the initials? If so it MIGHT have been Ballard W. Tabor, b. 1860, d. 1926, who was a much older man than William B. Tabor, b. 1873. A note of interest: This William B. Tabor is not in the 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census, with his family or otherwise!) SEE ENTRY TWO PLACES DOWN IN THIS FILE J. B. Graham has ninety thousand feet of lumber on the yard at this place which has been inspected and is now ready for shipping. ( I believe to be John B. Graham, b. April, 1861 in VA 1900 Tazewell Co VA Census JOHN B. GRAHAM, 39, b. Apr 1861, VA, lumberman -living in Falls Mills Area in census …..Paulenia, 36, wife, b. June 1898, daughter) Blake Tabor, from North Dakota, who has been visiting friends and relatives at this place for some time, will leave for home in a few days. (WOW! Who was this?) I have NO Blake Tabor. I checked all Tabor men for a middle name of Blake. I do have a few with the middle initial of "B It is not known-by me- what the initial stands for in the name. Maybe this is the William B. Tabor that was NOT in the 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census. Does anyone know the answer to this riddle? Walton Witten and Graham have been awarded the contract for grading four miles of new road on Crane Creek, W. Va. Lee J. Barbee was called to Roanoke Saturday by telegram on business for Walton & Co. (This was Lee J. Barbee, Sr. Lee J. Barbee, Sr., and his wife, Fannie P, had a son, Lee J. Barbee, Jr., who was the husband of Myrtle Belle Wagner, d/o James Henry Wagner & Cassie Ellen Belcher. 1900 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS # 72 Clear Fork, Dist LEE J. BARBER (sic), 38, b. Jan 1862 in VA, bookkeeper …..Fannie P., 31, wife, b. Jan 1869 in VA, had had 3 children, 2 living in 1900 * …..Edward M., 8, b. Oct 1891, son b. VA …..Lee J., b. Sep 1898, VA., son) * They had a daughter, Bessie Barber, (sic) that died July 9, 1894 at the age of 5 days at Graham, Tazewell Co., VA. I. H. Harry and J. W. Fink attended the Masonic Lodge at Graham Saturday night. They report two initiations and a nice time. (Isiah Henderson Harry-husband of Meldora Moore Tabor, d/o John Andrew Tabor and Martha A. Compton-his first wife of three. J. W. Fink- I believe to be John W. Fink , s/o James C. Fink and Cynthia M. Dudley, d/o Hugh D. Dudley & Mary Jane Shuffleberger. Hugh D. Dudley was the brother of James Craig Dudley who married Mariah Elizabeth/Louise Tabor-d/o Francis Tabor & Mary Shrader). The work on O. D. Fields’ new house is progressing rapidly. The carpenters will complete their work in a few days. (Oscar D. Fields, -listed as a bridge carpenter in the 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census, b. March 1876 in NC. Oscar was the husband of Cora Bell Buckland, d/o Jacob Alexander Buckland & Sarah J. Tabor-d/o James Harrison Tabor & Nancy Moore Runion/Ruynon). The foundation for the S. Walton & Co., office has been dug out and the corner stone laid. Mr. S. W. Marrs is superintending the work. ( I have a few Marrs men , in this window of time, old enough to have been this man. Most all the Marrs families were kin to the Shrader/Tabor families in the area). Submitted for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Karen EAGLE Moman
