A. LESLIE, EDITOR COST $1:00 PER YEAR-IN ADVANCE BAILEY BAILEY, Va., April 15 MR. and MRS. C. A. DEATON were summoned on yesterday to the bedside of their sister, MRS. ELIZABETH THOMASON, Mrs. Elizabeth Thomason is not expected to live. (Charles Anderson Deaton and Elizabeth A. ‘Lizzie’ Deaton were the children of Nathan Deaton & Sarah F. Mitchell. Charles was married to his second wife before this date. The first wife of Charles A. Deaton was Sarah Frances Mc Claugherty and his second wife was Rebecca Ann Martin whom he had married on the 28th of April 1884 in Mercer Co., WV. Elizabeth A. Deaton Thomason, married James Daniel Thomason, s/o Bannister Thomason. Elizabeth did NOT die soon after this date, Elizabeth apparently did not die until sometime around Dec. 10, 1909 at Bailey, Tazewell Co., VA., as her death was recorded in the "Clinch Valley News" on Friday, Dec 10, 1909 . The article stated: "Mrs. Elizabeth Thomason, widow of the late Daniel Thomason, died at her home near Bailey a week, or so ago, in the 91st year of her age. She was a Miss Deaton, sister to the well known family of Deatons, of this county and sister to E.G. Wagner’s mother. Mrs. Thomason was perhaps, at the time of her death, the oldest woman in the county." (E. G. Wagner was Elias Green Wagner and Elias’ parents were David Nicewander Waggoner-older spelling of surname- and Mariah E. Deaton. Elias Green Wagner was married twice, first to Martha Alice Bailey and after her death in Dec 1895 he married Mary Ann ‘Mollie’ Kinzer the d/o John Broce Kinzer & Clarissa Jeanette ‘Liz’ Tabor who was the d/o Richrad Adam Tabor & Mildred Permelia’Milly’ Shrader .Elias Green Wagner moved to Bland Co. VA. which was also noted in the "Clinch Valley News" : Friday, October 1, 1909 Mr. Wagner Gone! Mr. E. G. Wagner and his family left on Tuesday for their new home in Bland County. It will be recalled that Mr. Wagner purchased recently a fine farm in Bland from the late W. G. Mustard. MISSES LENA BUFFALO and MOLLIE CROCKETT were the guests of MISSES ELLA and GRAY WAGNER Saturday and Sunday. Our boys say "come again, young ladies." [Lena Buffalo was the d/o Rane(sic) and Frances A. Buffalo. Rane was a carpenter. Lena D. Buffalo was b. Oct 1887 and was 12 years old in 1900. I can not find a Mollie (name of endearment for Mary) Crockett in the 1900 Tazewell Co. VA Census. I believe Gray Wagner to be Ozella Gray Wagner ?a d/o Elias Green Wagner and his first wife Martha Alice Bailey, but am uncertain of the Ella Wagner. Ella MIGHT have been Amanda Ella Wagner, d/o Charles Alexander Wagner & Jane Annabelle Bailey . Charles Alexander Wagner was the brother of Elias Green Wagner and also lived in the Bailey area of Tazewell Co VA. My mom, Hettie Marie (Shrader) Eagle, LOVED this family and she especially loved Annabell (Bailey) Wagner’s homemade bread]. CHARLIE CARTER, of Keystone, and two daughters, are visiting his father, DANIEL CARTER, near Teal Branch. (Charles Albert Carter whose daughter, Margaret Sue Carter, b.12 Aug 1908-known as Sue Carter, married William, McKinley ‘Ken’ Tabor, s/o Hugh Edward Tabor and Margaret Rebecca ‘Becky’ Sluss. Before April 1901 Charles A. Carter had daughters, Hattie Pearl and Ethel Mae Carter other daughters born later were Mable Paige & Margaret Sue Carter thee were also four sons, Clarence, b. Dec 1896, Joseph, Harry Edward and Fred). Charles A. Carter’s mother was Elizabeth Owens. J. M. BURNS, Inspector for the Bumbarger (Rumbarger?) Lumber Co., was here last week taking up DEATON and WAGNER’S lumber. (Do not know which Deaton or which Wagner as more than one family lived in the Bailey, VA area). (Both George Thomas Deaton & Charles Anderson Deaton lived in the area. I am uncertain of Geo. T. Deatons parents, but Charles Anderson Deaton was the s/o Nathan Deaton & Sarah F. Mitchell). MESSRS. C. E. and J. E. WAGNER, who are engaged in the coal field, spent Sunday with home folks. (It is my opinion that James Edward Wagner, a Civil Engineer, was the J. E. Wagner and the s/o David Nicewander Wagner & Mariah E. Deaton but I am uncertain about the identity of C. E. Wagner). MISS SALLIE WAGNER is visiting her sister, MRS. C. W. BAILEY, at Bluestone, this week, ( Sallie A. Wagner & Martha E. Wagner are the daughters of David Nicewander Wagner & Mariah E. Deaton . C.W. Bailey was Charles W. Bailey the s/o Alexander Bailey & Martha Matilda McDowell. Martha E. Wagner married again after C. W. Bailey was killed by a train). ADDED DATA: 1913-1931 Obituary Index of Tazewell Co., VA...As reported in local publications CHARLES W. BAILEY.............17 Oct 1913 Date is the day of publication and NOT the day of death REV. W. H. WAGNER, (sic) of Liberty Hill, stopped off with relatives last week on his return from the Baltimore Conference. ( I BELIEVE to be Rev. William Nathan Wagner who was married to Susan Frances Canter and in the 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census of the Maiden Spring District , William N. Wagner , age 46, b. Mar 1854 and had been married for 19 years, was listed as a preacher.) Rev. Wm. N. Wagner was the s/o David Nicewander Wagner & Mariah E. Deaton. ADDED NOTE: (From "Tazewell County" page 223-224, by Louise Leslie: This MIGHT be the same family: "In 1901 a "water spout’ was the death knell for Liberty Hill. (The event) …touched down on Paint Lick Mountain and Knob Mountain, and literally washed Liberty away….. At the parsonage—a house still standing, the last on the left—lived the preacher’s wife, Mrs. Wagner, and her family, She was marooned on the house’s upper porch, as the waters rose to alarming proportions. Mindful of her life’ s work, however, she clung to the railing, shouting that she was going to Jesus with her bible in her hand! Rescued with considerable difficulty by Squire Moore and Joe Hagy, on horseback, it was later discovered that the "Testament" she swore by was none other than the Sears, roebuck catalog! MISS CARRIE FRENCH (sic) was the guest of MISS BESSIE HOUNDSELL on night last week. [I BELIEVE Carrie French to have been Carra W. French as the only Carrie French listed in 1900 Tazewell Co VA Census was a young Black woman who was living, as a servant, in the home of a James Daumfort. Carra W. French was the d/o Charles Campbell French and Nancy Abigail Pauley. Carra W. French married James Robert Dudley, s/o James Craig Dudley & Mariah Elizabeth/Louisa Tabor who was the d/o Francis Tabor & Mary Shrader , NOT Mary Sanders as recorded incorrectly in the Tazewell Co., VA marriage records. I BELIEVE Bessie Houndsell to have been Sarah E. Houndsell, (this is an assumption that her name was Sarah Elizabeth. Elizabeth carried these names of endearment:.Bess, Bessie, Beth, Bettie, Betty, Eliza, Liz, Liza, Lizzie, Lizzy) d/o Au___?___ & Julia A. Houndsell]. REV. J. W. HOOLBROOK was seen walking around out of the house today for the first time in a long while. He has stayed indoors all winter suffering with bronchitis. [Rev. James W. Holbrook, s/o Randall/Randolph Holbrook & Mary H. Waggoner, d/o Daniel Waggoner & Lucy Ann Day. Waggoner is the older spelling of Wagner. Rev. James W. Holbrook married Christina Margaret/Margaret Christina Shrader, d/o John Henry Shrader, Jr.,( s/o Henry Shrader, Sr., and second wife, Louis a Kennedy), and Edith Belle ‘Edy’ Day, d/o Daniel Day & Christina Milam]. MISS BESSIE HOUNDSELL is visiting her cousin, MRS. CHAS. GILL, this week. [I BELIEVE Bessie Houndsell to have been Sarah E. Houndsell, (this is an assumption that her name was Sarah Elizabeth. Elizabeth carried these names of endearment: .Bess, Bessie, Beth, Bettie, Betty, Eliza, Liz, Liza, Lizzie, Lizzy d/o Au___?___ & Julia A. Houndsell. Mrs. Charles Gill was a Bessie Frazier Gill-I do not think Frazier is a surname, in this case]. 1900 Tazewell co., VA Census # 28, Clear Fork District, W. W. Wells, enumerator CHARLES GILL, 37, b. June 1862, in VA , farmer (all in home b. VA) …..Bessie Frazier, 24, b. Dec 1875, wife, had had 2 children …..Lena May, 2, b. March 1898, daughter …..Howard H. 10/21=10 months, b. July 1899, son Yesterday was preaching day at our church, but the weather was so unpleasantthat the preacher himself was the congregation SUNSHINE (apparently a pen name for the submitter) Karen EAGLE Moman arizonaeagle@qwest.net March, 2002
