Summers, esq., of Bluestone, Va., is found this record: "This certifies that the rite of matrimony was celebrated between WILLIAM SUMMERS, of Tazewell county, and MARTHA L. BANE, of Tazewell county, Va., on the 16th day of June, 1852, at Wm. R. Bane’s by REV. GEO. W. G. BROWN Witness. REV. EDWARD C. WEXLER, REV JNO D. VINCELL. Rev. Brown was then clerk of Tazewell county. In a few years he moved to Texas and I think died there A few years since. Rev. Mr. Wexler was then "the circuit rider" on a territory now embracing 20 charges. He was a strong preacher and has long since died. Rev. Dr. Vincell is a native of Tazewell and is now a distinguished citizen of Missouri, and lives in St. Louis where he went many years ago. He remembers the event very distinctly and spoke to the writer a few months since with reference to it. He was at the time teaching on Bluestone and had also commenced preaching which he yet does with great power and eloquence. Among the few now surviving that were then present, are both the groom and the bride, who have celebrated the 50th return of the day by inviting children, grandchildren and a few special friends to spend the day with them. Of the ten children born to them, six of the living were present. REV. G. W. SUMMERS, Bristol, Va.,-Tenn., MRS. NANNIE E. MC DOWELL, wife of REV. R. T. MC DOWELL, Cumberland Gap, Tenn., MRS. W. C. HARMAN, MRS. A . J. NASH, MRS ANNETTE E. TROGDEN and J. H. SUMMERS, Bluestone, Va. Of the 36 grandchildren, and one of the fourth generation, 20 were present to enjoy the occasion. The groom of 50 years ago may be described as nearly 6 feet high, compactly built, strong and active, with a ruddy face, heavy locks and "handsome." He is now somewhat deaf, feeble and thin in flesh, with gray hair and white beard-an old man in his 77th year. The bride of half a century was medium in height and small of size, with a round face, fair skin and large blue eyes. She is now gray and otherwise shows age, but is much larger and fleshier and is usually strong and active for one in her 69th year. It is the ardent wish of all that this worthy couple enjoy many years yet of earthly life-even unto the date of the diamond wedding, but this is scarcely possible since so few reach the Golden Wedding Anniversary.
