We are glad to have them with us once again. They were accompanied by Mr. W.L. SHAWVER, Jr. The Sunday School at this place is starting up with pleasing prospects. The family of F.S. WALLACE is afflicted with measles. Messrs. Austin and John BROYLES, of Saltville, spent a part of last week visiting friends and relatives at this place. Mrs. Lou WILLIAMS is still very poorly. She does not seem to improve any. Mr. and Mrs. J.G. GILLESPIE spent last week in Giles with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. GILLEPIE. Rev. J.F. JONES returned home Sunday after a protracted meeting at Falls Mills and reports a good meeting. Miss Dolla CROCKETT will close her school at W.A. GARDNER'S this week. -- Hoosier Tip Top, The track is laid on the first bridge of the Graham Iron Co's side tract here and 40 bents of No. 2 are up, 13 more to raise yet. This trestle reaches nearly acress Wrights Valley from the Main line and across the county road. The two bridges together are nearly 900 feet long. FALLS MILLS --------------------- Charlie COMPTON, who was hurt several days ago on the railroad by the track jack slipping and letting the rail fall upon his leg is still in a dangerous condition. Crockett SARVER, who lost his leg in trying to board a moving freight train several months ago, has been dangerously ill, but is thought to be better at this writing. Ed BUCKLIN has a job with the American Bridge Co. This means no more stealing if Ed is awake. Mrs. Emily BUCKLIN visited relatives and friends at Bluefield last week. C.M. DEYERIE visited friends and relatives in Roanoke last week. E.A. DEATON has rented the property formerly owned by A.B. BOWER, and is keeping bachelor's hall. Madam Rumor has it that Ed will not bach but a short while. At present the wheat crop in this section looks like a total failure. W.E. DUDLEY has moved his family from this place to Williamson, West Virginia. Mr. RILEY, bridge foreman on the N & W paid our village a visit last Sunday. Mr. Shep GILLESPIE and wife were visiting Mr. Robert GILLESPIE last Sunday. Capt. Tom STAPLES made a flying visit to Bluefield last Monday. Mr. S. WALTON is on a business trip down east. Miss Elma GREEVER, of Graham was visiting friends at this place last Saturday and Sunday. Thieves entered the mill of J.C. HOLBROOK & Co. Monday night and took a quantity of flour. They made their entrance by smashing a pane of glass then reaching in the removing the window prop. H.D. DUDLEY, T. TABOR, C.W. BUTT and J.W. FINK made a trip to Tazewell last Tuesday in the interest of the proposed wagon road in this locality. J.W. SARVER paid Clear Fork and Tazewell a flying visit last Monday and Tuesday. POCAHONTAS --------------------------------------- H.A. GIESON, assistant chief of the Pocahontas Fire Co., attended a banquet, to firemen at Roanoke on Thursday night. Mr. GIESON'S address was very good, and gave a fine description of how the mountain boys fight fire - so the Times says. Miss Josie DENNEN, who is teaching at Ennis, visited her parents on Sunday. Thomas DENNEN visited Bluefield on Saturday. The young men of the town gave Mr. GALWAY quite a 'blow out' on Saturday night. A light lunch was served and among those to make speeches were G.B. MCDONALD, on "Batchelor Life." Wilkie COLLINS - "The Side Show Fake" H.A. GLESEN, on the great discoveries recently made of extracting "Fluid from Hops." Floyd BLACK - a selection of scenes from "William Tell" John TANNER favored the crowd with negro coon songs and dances. J. Walton THOMAS, auditor for the Pocahontas Wholesale Grocery Co. paid a business trip to Radford on Friday. Thomas CARTER has accepted a position at the Inn as Clerk. Mrs. CARTER and baby have arrived from Charlotte, N.C. and are happy at the Inn. I.J. BANDY, for a number of years clerk at Hotel Roanoke, is the new night clerk at the Inn. Joe MCGEE continues ill. Mr. and Mrs. Sol BAACH gave a house party at their keystone home last week. The attendants from Pocahontas were Misses Ray and Sadie BAACH, Landon and Eleinger. Messrs. UMBERGER, JONES and BLACK. They all report a gala time. Abe MILLER, of Bluefield, visited his parents on Monday. Mrs. A.H. LEWIS, wife of Assistant Superintendent LEWIS of the Pocahontas Colleries Co. came on Wednesday from Wilkesbarro, Pa. and will live on Water Street. Mr. and Mrs. C.M. GALWAY have returned from their bridal tour. While away they visited Washington, New York and Boston. Mrs. Sol BAACH, of Keystone was in Pocahontas Sunday en route to Radford to visit Elsiter, who is ill. TABORVILLE ---------------------- Mr. c.E. BUCKLAND who has been the postmaster at Falls Mills, for some time has excepted a position at Cooper, West Virginia and Dr. A.W. TABOR takes his place in the post office. The Dr. is a good postmaster and all around good fellow any way you take him. Mr. Frank HILL of Cooper, West Virginia is up visiting his brother, W.G. HILL as was also Mr. Charles WISE of Eckman, West Virginia, visiting his wife and line ones. Rev. Mr. JONES pastor of the M.E. Church is holding a protracted meeting at Falls Mills. He says religioin is as scares at Falls Mills as hen teeth and that is just about the truth. Will COMPTON is sowing a big lot of grass seed this spring. He says he thinks it will be a good season for grass this year. Mr. James BELCHER of Mercer, Co, West Virginia was on Mud Fork last week selling farm machinery. He sold our friend W.H. HILL a mower and hay rake. Mr. Crockett SARVER whose name was mentioned in the NEWS some time ago, as having his foot cut off by a freight train is very sick with side plurey, his leg is about healed up. C.E. COMPTON, of Flat Top Yards has been real sick for several days, but is some better at this writing. Mr. Will COMPTON one of our most popular young men of this place, and Miss Ida BELCHER of Mercer County, West Virginia was united in marriage last Wednesday at the home of the brides father, Mr. James BELCHER. On the following day they came to Taborville where they will make there future home. Mr. and Mrs. T.G. SUTTEN of Elkhorn was up last Sunday a week ago visiting there brother Charles SUTTEN. Mr. Tabor BELCHER says it will be pretty hard on him to pay tax on seven dogs, but he will just advance the price of rabbits ten cents, and soon make it back. Mr. J.C. FINK was visiting his son Hugh at Keystone last Sunday. FREELING ---------------------------------------------- Wedington VANOVER, aged 20, son of James VANOVER shot himself in the head with a pistol from which death resulted in a few hours. No cause is known for the rash act. About a week before the occurrence he told some of his friends that he was going to die and gave the same directions as to his burial, when the fatal blow came he was sitting on the bedside, and drew his pistol, placed the muzzle against his head just about the right eye and fired, the ball entering the brain. Lilburne KELLEY a young man of this place had the misfortune to cut his foot nearly off with an ax. There is considerable talk of the Railroad operation in this county at the Breaks of Cumberland Mountains. There are two companies at work there, The Chesapeak and Ohio and the Ohio river and Charleston are working several hands now. BENBOW ---------------------------- Mr. and Mrs. A.B. BUCHANAN went to town Tuesday. Our Sunday School is progressing nicely. We now have about 40 scholars on roll. The greatest draw back we have is to get enough church members out to open the school. C.W. MATHEWS, of Graham, was in the community at the first of that week on business. Miss Nellie and Eddy LYNCH were visiting in Tazewell Saturday and Sunday. BAILEY -------------------- John MOORE died Friday of last week, and was buried on Saturday in the family burying ground, on the farm. John was about 21 or 22 years old, and was the youngest child of Samuel L. MOORE, who is well known to many readers of the NEWS. He died of consumption. Mr. and Mrs. J.B. MULLINS, of Eastern, Abbs Valley, visited Mrs. MULLIN'S father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. G.R. KARR, Sunday and today returning home this evening. Dr. and Mrs. J.B. TABOR, of Pocahontas, are visiting Mrs. TABOR'S father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. MOORE, as they expect to leave Pocahontas and go to Williamson, West Virginia. This seems to be a farewell (for a while) visit. Miss Mary WAGNER was riding down this valley yesterday evening and as she got near the house of Rev. J.w. HOLBROOK, her horse was frightened at something, whirled around and jumped suddenly, and we are told made the second jump before the rider fell, but she did fall on her back at the second jump of the animal. Dr. REYNOLDS was called in as soon as possible. He thinks she is badly but not seriously hurt. She is not able to be moved and is still at Rev. HOLBROOKS. Miss Emma HANSHOE has a very severe attack of grip, but is a little better at this writing. Mrs. HOUNSHELL suffered severely some days ago with rheumatism in her right shoulder. Her arm was swollen to the ends of her fingers, but we are glad to report her better now. HORSEPEN --------------------------- W.J. HARRIS the hustling merchant of this place has gone to Tazewell today. Miss Nannie Lou DANIEL returned to school at Richlands Monday. Mr. Isaac BELCHER, a prominent merchant of Abbs Valley, passed through the cove Sunday going in the direction of North Tazewell. There seems to be some attraction that way for him. Mr. James DALTON had the misfortune to lose a twenty dollar bill last week. So far he has received no trace of the lost money. Mr. E. WHITMAN and sister, Miss Josie, are visiting their sister, Mrs. COPENHAVER at Richlands this week. Dr. S.A. DANIEL accompanied the remains of I.C. EFFLER to this place for burial and spent a few days with relatives, returning to Welch Monday. Miss Anne YOUNG, of Lower Abbs Valley, is spending the weeks with her cousin, Mr. Dexter DANIEL. Mrs. C.C. ALMOND, who has been sick for some time, is still in very feeble health. Mrs. Mary EFFLER has gone to Welch to see her father in law, Mr. John EFFLER, who has been in very poor health for some time. He started to Philadelphia Saturday, where he will receive treatment from an eminent physician. D.B. DANIEL'S angora goats have arrived. They are very large and received many compliments. J.P. WHITMAN and daughter Miss Nannie, attended the funeral of John MOORE at Bailey. -------------- Judge AYERS of Russell, held court for Judge STUART on Tuesday, in the trail if the Buffalow case, which was continued. Charles EVANS was given two years in the Penitentiary for forgery. C.M. ANDERSON is being tried today for grand larceny.
