FRENCH, of Pocahontas, was in this city Tuesday. Col. James BROWNING, of Pocahontas was in town yesterday. Prof. J.A. LESLIE has returned from a protracted trip in Kentucky. Gen. James A. WALKER, of Wytheville was in the city during the week. Mr. George R. MCCALL of Doran, was in town this morning and called at the News office. Born to Mr. and Mrs. W.T. GILLESPIE, on Tuesday last, a daughter. Mother and child are doing well. Mrs. Frank KELLY, of Saltville and Miss Nannie Sexton, of Marion, are visiting their brother, Mr. V.L. Sexton, on Main Street. Mrs. PRESTON, of Abingdon, mother of Mr. Henry PRESTON, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Jennie, are visiting Mr. PRESTON at his home on Railroad Ave. Miss Ida KELLY, who has been visiting her uncle, Mr. V.L. SEXTON, left for her home in Saltville, Tuesday last. She was accompanied by her cousin, Mr. S.V. KELLY. Mr. H.W. POBST is making preparations to begin work on his new business home on Main Street. Mr. John S. YOUNG and wife are visiting at the home of his brother, Mr. M.G. YOUNG on Main Street. Mr. James BUSTON is erecting a residence on Railroad Avenue. Messrs. HELDRETH have the contract. Major and Mrs. BRITTAIN, accompanied by Miss Mattie LEWIS, returned from a visit to eastern Virginia Wednesday. The trial of R.L. DOUGLASS indicted for the murder of a peddler on Rich Mountain, February 1st, will come up at the first day of July court Tuesday next. Miss Florence BELEW left on Tuesday for her old home at Grenada, Miss. to visit friends and relatives. Her many friends join in wishing her a safe trip and a pleasant visit. Mr. ELLIS has returned from Lunenburg County, where he has been visiting friends for the past ten days and his smiling face is again seen behind the counter ?. Miss Maggie BOWEN, Eva PAINTER and Amanda BARNES, of the Cove, accompanied by Miss RUSSELL of Lee County, who has been visiting Miss BOWEN, were in the city during the week. POUNDING MILL ------------------------------- Rev. A.A. FERGUSON and family left here Saturday for their home at Tazewell. Their parents, Rev. A. FERGUSON and wife, will join them next Monday. We regret very much to lose this excellent family. They have made many friends here. Mrs. C.P. WILLIAMS has returned from Tip Top. Mrs. J. Marion MCGUIRE and daughter, Miss Callie of Cedar Bluff, spent last Friday with Mrs. W.B. STEELE. Mr. R.M. SPARKS had a fine cow killed by the passenger train yesterday evening. Mr. P.M. ALDER, who has been clerking for W.B. STEELE and Co. for the past three years, by his own consent has left and joined the bridge force. We expect him back by Saturday next any way. Mr. M.C. MCCORKLE now works a large force of hands than ever before at his steam saw mill, which now cuts 11,000 feet daily. Miss Leona MURRELL spent Tuesday with her friend, Mrs. W.B. STEELE, or her way from the Cove to Pocahontas. Mr. Shade STEELE, of Paint Lick, is visiting his son, W.B. STEELE. Mrs. Sheffey STURGILL and her son John visited Mrs. BROWN in Little Valley last week. Mr. J.M. LAMBERT spent a few days in Welch, West Virginia, last week. CEDAR BLUFF ----------------------------------------- Mr. W.H. WHITE has returned home from Tazewell and is again at his studies at the depot. Mr. W.A. WARD, of Paint Lick was in town yesterday. Mrs. C.H. PEERY has returned from Paint Lick, where she has been on a visit to her mother, Mrs. BROWN. Bridge No. 1349 just west of the depot is to be rebuilt entirely. The old timbers having become decayed. The lumber is now on the yard for the purpose. Capt. Eulle LOW is again a citizen of our town, having finished up the work of which be had charge at Saltville. Mr. Eugene REPASS and wife of Saltville are visiting relatives in town. Mr. W.M. DURHAM, the practical miller met with misfortune of puncturing his foot with a nail.
