All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ==================================================================== Clinch Valley News July 23, 1897 POUNDING MILL ----------------------------------- Mrs. Maria LAIRD, of Cedar Bluff, and Miss Jennie WITTEN, of Unaka, came up from Cedar Bluff Sunday afternoon and spent the night with their cousin, Mrs. C.P. WILLIAMS. Mrs. Tom HAWKINS and little daughter, Myrtle, of Tazewell, visited Mrs. J.M. LAMBERT Saturday night and Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. MCGRAW came up from Steelsburg and all dined with their relative Mrs. Lou EDMONDS. Mr. and Mrs. W.B. STEELE spent Thursday with home folks at Cedar Bluff. The meeting which began on Saturday night by Revs. GILLESPIE and JOHNSON, closed Monday afternoon. Rev. JOHNSON preached Sunday night and Monday at 11. On Sunday night the house was full. Everybody enjoyed the meeting. Mrs. Will MULKEY will give a croquet party this evening. Mrs. J. Marion MCGUIRE and son Jim visited relatives here Saturday and Sunday respectively. Mr. and Mrs. R.M. SPARKS and baby of Richlands were guests of Mrs. George THOMAS Tuesday night, and returned home this PM. Mr. and Mrs. Sam WITTEN and son, of Pisgah, visited their sister, Mrs. T.H. BRYANT Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Nancy DAVIS went to Cedar Bluff this PM. Mr. Ben RYLEY spent a couple of days recently with his son, A.H. RYLEY. Mr. John HICKMAN and Master Newt, of Bluefield, visited friends here the past week. Miss Sallie MAXWELL spent Saturday and Sunday with friends here. Mr. P.H. WILLIAMS, of the Cove, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. C.P. WILLIAMS Tuesday. The Supt. was on his way to Richalnds, at which place he will help to conduct the Normal. Mrs. Will DURHAM, of Cedar Bluff, spent last night with Mrs. W.B. STEELE. CEDAR BLUFF ------------------------------------------ Miss Nannie YOST, of Graham is visiting relatives at this place. Wade H. PEERY and Edward F. LAIRD are sick at their homes with typhoid fever. Miss Lottie SHELDON, of Portsmouth, Va is the guest of Miss Mattie PEERY. Miss Tillie WITTEN, of Unaka, is visiting her sister, Mrs. S.H. LARID, at this place. We are glad to see Mr. Henry WHITE in our midst again. Prof. Alson M. HUTTON was in town on Monday eve. Rev. L.O. ADAMS, pastor of the Methodist Church, has gone to Big Rock, Buchanan County to hold a quarterly meeting for J.T. FRAZIER, presiding elder. William and Albert MCFARLAND were visiting friends and relatives in Cedar Bluff Saturday and Sunday. The following named teachers of Cedar Bluff are attending the normal at Old Dominion College, Richlands, Va: Callie and Ella MCGUIRE, Maria LAIRD, Ida WINGO and Messrs J.R. LAIRD and T.A. REPASS Jr. GENERAL NEWS ----------------------------- Mrs. Crockett THOMPSON of Kelly, died yesterday morning at 2 o'clock, of typhoid fever. The stricken husband and motherless children have the sympathy of the entire community in their great sorrow. Several members of the family are still quite sick. Judge STUART has been in Welch a part of this week. George MCCALL is at Pounding Mill this week putting up hay. Dr. C.A. THOMPSON'S little daughter has been ill with flux. She is getting better. Miss Minnie CAMPBELL, of Lynchburg, is visiting Mrs. J.W. CHAPMAN, her friend and school mate. Mr. G.R. SURFACE returned this week from a visit to friends and relatives in Giles, his old home. Mr. J.O. CORRELL is one of those good hearted fellows, who can give and take, when it comes to a joke. Mrs. Rosa Witten KROLL, and the baby are on a visit to home folks. The baby has been sick, but is better. Mrs. W.C. FOSTER and children arrived here yesterday evening. Ben FOSTER's face wears a broader smile now. Mrs. J.H. STUART and Misses Nellie and Cecil, who have been visiting at New River, Va, for the past two weeks, returned Tuesday. Rev. I.P. MARTIN will preach before the Royal Arch School of Masons next Sunday, at Graham. Rev. M.J. WILLIAMS will fill the pulpit of the Methodist Church here. Mr. W.P. BURHAM, of Glade Spring, is visiting in the city, the guest of Mr. Willie BELEW. Mr. BURHAM graduated with first honors at Emory & Henry this year. Two of Mr. D.H. PAYNE'S children have been quite sick with something like cholera infantum. They are improving now. There is a good deal of sickness in Mr. PAYNE'S neighborhood. Mr. James CHARLES, Sheriff of Buchanan County, is visiting his friend, Thomas W. RATLIFFE. Mr. CHARLES displayed good taste when he came to Tazewell for his wife. He married a daughter of Mr. R.B. WITTEN. Mr. J.O. CORRELL, of Thompson Valley, was in town Tuesday. He has had a case of flux in his family, and says there is a great deal of sickness in the Valley. Mrs. A.T. HOPKINS and Mrs. John FOX has fever. All are getting better, however. W.I. BOONE left yesterday for Martinsville, Va. to spend several days visiting friends and relatives. He was accompanied by his daughter, Miss Mollie, who will remain in that section for a number of weeks. Mr. William S. THOMPSON, who lives near Wittens Mills, came to town early yesterday morning for a physician. His 20 months old baby is quite sick with cholera infantum and ??, with little hope of his recovery. We trust the baby may recover. Mrs. T.P. BOWEN and daughter, Miss Ella and Miss Lucy STUART, returned yesterday from Richlands and Huntington, West Virginia, where they have been visiting friends and relatives, and were accompanied by Mrs. T.P. STUART and Miss Bessie SEHON of Huntington. Mr. James WALDRON, son of A.S. WALDRON, died at the home of his mother in Horsepen Cove, last Monday morning at 8 o'clock, of consumption. Mr. WALDRON was about 26 years old, a young man highly respected among his friends, and beloved by all who knew him.
