GREEVER, the recently elected Clerk of the Court over John T. BARNS, has taken the oath of office, and will take full charge, January 1st, 1912, to serve eight years, his term of office expiring January 1st 1920. Dr. GREEVER has appointed Mr. Shell SURFACE as his deputy. He has moved his family here from Pocahontas, where he has been engaged for several years. He is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. George R. SURFACE, and will do his best to fill the position, and no doubt will do it well. Both the Clerk and his deputy are Republicans. S.M. GRAHAM, the retiring Clerk, was appointed to the position by Judge HENSON, upon the death of T.E. GEORGE, which death occurred January 5th, 1907. Mr. GRAHAM announced his candidacy for re-election last fall. Later was endorsed by the County Democratic Committee, and just before the election was upon the advice of friends, induced to retire from the race leaving the field clear between John T. BARNS, county chairman of the Republican party, and Dr. C.W. GREEVER, a "progressive" republican. ? Dr. GREEVER won out by a good maorit. The new officers begin their term of 8 years with the confidence of the people and the ? hope that they may fill the ? POUNDING MILL -------------------------- Mr. and Mrs. Will WINGO and children and Miss Annie LUTTRELL, Indian, spent Saturday night with their relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Charles GRIMSTEAD. Miss Lena STEELE, Indian, spent Saturday and Sunday with her grandfather, W.F. MCGUIRE, on the Branch and called on friends here Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Eliza LESTER and son and daughter, Mr. Bennie and Miss Wryene, of Cove dined with Mrs. W.B. STEELE today on their way from Tazewell. Mr. Jonas BALDWIN, who has pluro-pneumonia is very ill, very little hope is entertained for his recovery. He will probably not survive through the night. Mrs. M.J. STURGILL was called to Maxwell on Saturday on account of the sickness and death of Mrs. Blair YOUNG, who passed to the Great Beyond at nine o'clock Saturday night. Her death as a triumphant one, she begged her husband and relatives not to pine for her, that she would soon be at rest. She left a husband and four little girls besides parents, brothers and sisters and a host of friends to mourn their loss. A little son, Clint, 8 years old, preceded her to the grave less than a year ago, from which great stroke she began to decline in health rapidly. Her disease was consumption. She lived at this place when a girl, and her many neighbors and friends were sorry to hear of her death. She was about thirty four years of age. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor Rev. PANGLE, on Sunday afternoon. May God comfort the bereaved ones, and may they lives according to the Word, and at last meeting her in Heaven. Mrs. Tom STEELE and Mrs. Floyd ASCUE, Cedar Bluff, spent Saturday afternoon with Mrs. W.B. STEELE. Mr. and Mrs. Howard REED have moved to Bluefield. Mrs. Alex ALTIZER spent yesterday with her daughter, Mrs. Alex BEAVERS, at Maxwell. Mercer THOMAS visited his sister, Mrs. WARD, at Whitewood, last week. Miss Barbara HURT and Ralfee GILLESPIE were home from Tazewell High School the last of the week. Miss Uva STEELE is at Cedar Bluff yesterday and today teaching her large music class at that place. Mrs. R.H. MCGRAW was a pleasant visitor here last week, on the way from Portsmouth to Cincinnati where she visited her daughter, Mrs. HOUNSHELL. Leonard SPRATT, Richlands, was a visitor here Sunday. R.K. GILLESPIE is unloading a car of hulled corn. Rev. PANGLE did not fill his usual appointment here Sunday afternoon on account of the death mentioned above. He expects to preach here the 5th Sunday afternoon. The railroad order of workmen met here Sunday. TANNERSVILLE --------------------------------------- Prof. OWENS is making an endeavor to start a singing school here. Our school teacher, Norman PHILLIPPS who has been visiting his parents in Floyd County, has returned here and will resume teaching. Mr. and Mrs. W.M. WEBB were visiting at Mr. W.A. HILT'S Saturday and Sunday. Miss Ella HORTON and brother from Richlands were visiting old friends here last week. Miss HORTON taught school here some few years ago. Mr. Robert HOLMES, of North HOLSTON, is at this place helping his brother, G.P HOLMES, erect a handsome dwelling. Mr. James PATRICK'S baby is sick. Mr. John TAYLOR, of this place, left Saturday for Washington County. Mr. M.F. BROWN, left today for Bristol. Mr. W.A. CRABTREE has gone to Chilhowie today. Kirk and Patrick have moved their saw mill from Ed BOOTH'S to H.J. WHITEWOOD'S. Mrs. R.P. HILT was visiting at Mr. I.L. PATRICK'S last week. Mrs. W.R. PATRICK, and Mrs. Den WIMMER were visiting at I.L. PATRICK'S Sunday. - Correspondent Sammy Lammy SHAWVERS MILL ----------------------------- Mr. John LEFFEL has been ill with pneumonia, but is now convalescent. Mr. Steward STOWERS, of Bluefield, spent Sunday evening at the home of Mr. W.R. NEEL. Miss Eliza DAVIS has been absent from school for several days, on account of a recent illness. Her teacher will be glad when she recuperates enough to be back, as she is such a bright and promising pupil. Mr. James RUBLE has been ill for some time. He still continues so. Mr. John NEEL and friend, dined last Sunday at the home of Mr. Sam SHAWVER. Dr. HICKS and Mr. William PRUETT have been busy for the last week cutting up their feed. --------------------- Dr. COPENHAVER and A.S. GREEVER returned from the big Poultry Show with flying colors. They both won new honors for their splendid breeds. Dr. COPENHAVER showed a S.C.R.L. Red cock which scored the highest in any class, and also the highest scoring pullet. He won first cock, third hen, first and second pullet second pen and third cockerel, and several special premiums. We have no report of Mr. GREEVER'S birds except that he sold a fine White Rock for $50 and won several premiums. LOCAL NEWS ------------------------------------ Miss Margaret STEELE, who has been the guest of her sister in Alabama, has returned to her home here. Mrs. Fred R. STEELE has returned from Norton, where she was the guest of her sister, Mrs. James PIERCE. Mrs. V.L. SEXTON, of Graham, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. ALDERSON, has returned to her home at Graham. Conductor Reese T. BOWEN, of Bluefield, spent last Tuesday with his mother here. The suit of the heirs of the last John B. HURT against the South Atlantic Life Insurance Company for $5,000, the face of the policy held by Mr. HURT at the time of his death, is pending in the Circuit Court here. The trail of Benjamin LESTER has been postponed until the next term of the court. The committee, appointed by the court to examine Joseph KENDRICK as to his sanity has not yet reported the trail of the case, will, of course, depend upon the report of this committee. James ALEXANDER, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank ALEXANDER, has been critically ill the past week with pneumonia. The child is much better. BURKES GARDEN ------------------------ (This communication reached the office too late for last issue). Burke's Garden, December 8 - Mr. Ben WILSON, of Ceres was the guest of Mr. Levi RHUDY, Sunday. Prof. A.S. GREEVER shipped a carload of apples from here last week. Mr. Fletch THOMPSON and family, after having spent two weeks with relatives and friends here and in Poor Valley, left Sunday for their home at Roanoke. Mrs. L.T. WYNN was quite sick part of last week. Rev. S.O. HALL preached at Central Church on Thanksgiving day and also filled his regular appointment at Central and Glade churches on last Sunday. Mr. Morgan WYNN, son of G.W. WYNEE, died at the home of his brother in law, T.H. SHORT, on November 25. The burial services were under the control of the I.O.O.F Lodge, of which deceased was member. Mr. and Mrs. W.J. HOGE, of Bland were welcome visitors to the Garden the first of the week. Mrs. Rachel WOODYARD is spending a few weeks with her nephew, H.R. STOWERS. The friends of Mrs. Marion RHUDY will be sorry to hear of her death, which took place at her home near Rural Retreat, last week. Mrs. RHUDY was a former resident of Burkes Garden. Mrs. E.L. RHUDY returned to her home here Sunday after spending two weeks with her parents at Rural Retreat. Elmer looks more cheerful since her return home. Mr. A.C. KITTS made a business trip to Rural Retreat last week. Miss Etta GREEVER has almost recovered from her recent illness. MAXWELL ---------------------------------------------------- Mrs. Bessie BRATTON, from Mossy, West Virginia, is here visiting her father, Dr. GROSS. Messrs Charles CONNETTE and Wiley THOMAS, of Welch, spent Sunday with their cousin Miss Elsie GRAYBEAL. Misses Lizzie and Leola PEERY, of Pisgah, and Mr. E.H. RATCLIFF, of Bluefield, called on friends here Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Ollie YOUNG, wife of Mr. E.B. YOUNG, died at her home at twelve o'clock Saturday night. Her funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday morning at eleven o'clock, and her remains were interred near Tazewell. Mrs. STURGILL, of Pounding Mill, was here, on account of the illness of Mrs. YOUNG. Rev. PANGLE was away Tuesday attending Quarterly meeting at Mt. Carmel. He reported a good meeting. Dr. P.D. JOHNSON, of Tazewell, was here Sunday to see Mrs. G.M. GRAYBEAL who has not been well for some time. Mrs. Rachel BEAVERS, who was ill last week, is convalescing George LAMBERT passed through town Tuesday. John FARMER and wife, from Gap Store, were in town Tuesday morning. Mr. B.F. DYE, road master, who has his office in Richlands, spent Sunday at home.
