DEATH: Typed as written: C. B. NEEL, FORMER TAZEWELL COUNTY RESIDENT IS DEAD Had Been Secretary of Virginia Coal Operators Association For Many Years; Born at Clear Fork CHARLES BROWN NEEL, aged fifty-seven, secretary of the Virginia Coal Operators Association, died Saturday morning in a Pennington Gap hospital. He had been ill for only a short time. MR. NEEL, was a striking version of gentleman of the old South. He was born in Clear Fork, Tazewell county, on August 5, 1878. He was a son of WILLIAM ELGIN NEEL and NANCY JANE MOORE, who were from distinguished ancestry. When thirteen years of age MR. NEEL, started his career as a messenger boy for the Norfolk and Western railway and was assigned to work as a operator a year later, and continued the railroad service for nine years. He was engaged in the coal business in Southwest Virginia and also in Kentucky, coming to Norton in 1924, when he was made secretary of the Virginia Coal Operators’ Association. He was a recognized authority on Virginia history. He is survived by his wife, MRS. MARY BAILEY NEEL, one daughter, MISS VIRGINIA NEEL, and two sons, WILLIAM ALEX NEEL and BAILEY NEEL. Funeral services were conducted in the Norton Baptist church Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, B. H. HAMPTON, assisted by REV. CLAUDIUS SMITH of Middlesboro.
