ELMORE and daughter, MISS KATHERINE, of Phoenix, Arizona, who have been spending the summer in Tazewell visiting Mrs .Elmore’s daughter, MRS. CONRAD LITZ, left last week for a month’s visit with Mrs. Elmore’s son, HARRY, who is the principal of the Gretna High School. R. E. ELMORE will join the family at Gretna after visiting his father at New Castle, CLIFTON W. ELMORE who is one of the two surviving Civil War veterans of the Civil War. Mr. Elmore, who was formerly pastor of the Tazewell Christian Church, is now pastor of Central Christian Church of Phoenix. In his six years ministry in phoenix more than a thousand members have been added to the church and Central Church is now the largest of our religious belief in the state. Mr. Elmore says the Phoenix summers are hot (with a Capital H) and therefore his church gives him a month’s vacation. (The other and last surviving Civil War veteran, of the Tazewell Co., VA area, and next to the last in the state of Virginia, was CHARLES WESLEY ‘WES’ MATTHEWS who died October 8, 1950 at 102 years of age. C. W. Matthews was born May 22, 1848, at Hillsville,Carroll Co., VA and was the s/o WILLIAM R. MATTHEWS. MC. W. Matthews is kin to my sister’s husband). FIVE CIVIL WAR VETS REMAIN IN VIRGINIA All but one of Virginia’s five surviving Confederate Veterans has reached or passed the century mark in age, records in the office of the State Chief Pension Clerk show. Ages of the surviving veterans are: John Salling, Scott County, 99 Charles W. Matthews, Bluefield, 100 John G. Dickerson, Suffolk, 103 Theodore N. Mayo, Norfolk, 103 George Bannister, Richmond, 100 General Julius Howell, died in Bristol several days ago at the age of 102. CIVIL WAR VETERANS: Clinch valley News, Friday, August 12, 1949, Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA. LAST VETERAN IN RICHMOND DIES Funeral services were held in St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Richmond Tuesday for GEORGE BANNISTER, the last of Richmond’s Confederate Veterans. Mr. Bannister died Saturday at the age of 101. His death reduced to two the living Virginia Veterans of Confederate Forces. The two living veterans are JOHN SALLING of Scott County and CHARLES W. MATTHEWS, of Bluefield, Va. At the age of 16 Mr. Bannister became a drummer-boy with the Forty-Ninth Virginia Regiment of Pickett’s Brigade. He stated that General Lee was the only General he met during the his war travels, and they met for the first time in Richmond following the March from Seven Pines. DEATH: Clinch Valley News, Friday, October 13, 1950, Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA. C. W. MATTHEWS Charles Wesley Matthews, veteran of the Confederate Army, died at his home in Bluefield Sunday night. He was 102 years old and next to the last Confederate Veteran in Virginia and one less that a score in the nation. Among the historical events remembered by Mr. Matthews in his lifetime was Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and the California gold rush. He was born in Hillsville May 22, 1848 on a farm. …………………………………………. ELMORES LIKED MR. and MRS. HARRY R. ELMORE and little daughter, JANIE JO, were delightfully taken by surprise when they returned to Gretna last week to find a multitude of their friends assembled at their home, the house set in order, the pantry filled with provisions and a warm diner smoking on the board. This is Mr. Elmore’s third year as principal of the Gretna Consolidated School, and he was gratified by this remarkable demonstration of affection and esteem in which he and Mrs. Elmore are held by the citizens and patrons of the school. (Gretna, VA is in Pittsylvania Co., not far from Danville). ……………….. HEALING SPRINGS North Tazewell, Aug. 27, MR. and MRS GRAT MURRAY visited MRS. JOHN HARMAM recently. MRS. MURRAY has recently returned from the hospital where she had her right hand amputated, due to an electric shock. MISS LOUISE SLUSS who has been visiting her uncle, DR. J. A. SLUSS, at Bristol, Tenn., returned to her home Sunday accompanied by DR. and MRS SLUSS, who visited home folks for several hours. (Louise, d/o Charles Walter Sluss, Sr., & Annie Ella Cassell, C. W. Sluss, s/o Rages Maroni Sluss, Sr., & Nancy Atelia ‘Nannie’ Litz. Dr. J. A. Sluss, is James Alma Sluss, DVM and his wife, Ocie Belcher. I have never found out the parents of this Ocie Belcher). MRS. C. W. SLUSS recently heard from her sister, MRS. R.A.HUGHES who is deeply grieved by the death of her daughter, CHRISTINE JOHNSON. MRS. HUGES is now serving as hostess at he Perfect Farm, near Washington. (Mrs. C. W. Sluss, Annie Ella Cassell whose parents were James Franklin Cassell & Christina Groseclose. I do not know the given name of Annie Cassell Sluss’ sister, Mrs. R. A. Hughes). GEORGE STRONER and GERALD WEAVER , of Mich., have been guests in the home of MRS. C. W. SLUSS. They are now visiting relatives in Roanoke and Huntington. (Mrs. C. W. Sluss, Annie Ella Cassell whose parents were James Franklin Cassell & Christina Groseclose).
