TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA - NEWSPAPERS - Clinch Valley News, 13 Aug 1943, Bluestone --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- "Clinch Valley News" Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Friday, August 13, 1943 BLUESTONE ITEMS Bluefield, Va., R. F. D., Aug. 11- Miss Jackie Christian left on Monday for Roanoke, where she will go in training at the Lewis Gale Hospital Miss Juanita Presley, of Akron , Ohio, spent last week end with friends here. Mrs. Curtis Stephenson and her daughter, Lois Jane, spent last week end in Gary, W. Va., with friends and relatives. [Curtis B. Stephenson s/o James & Ida M. Stephenson. Wife of Curtis Stephenson was Mildred Madeline Slade, d/o Gratton Wysor 'Grat' Slade & Ann Clifford Carbaugh. Gratton Slade, s/o John William Slade & Permelia Ann 'Amelia' Walker. Ann Clifford Carbaugh, d/o William Hamilton. 'Ham' Carbaugh & Elizabeth Holland Gregory]. Lila and Elsie Shrader are returning to Maryland to resume their duties in a defense plant. [Elsie Madelin Shrader and Lila Maxine/Marine? Shrader are the daughters of Samuel Homer Shrader & Mary Virginia Wilburn. Elsie Shrader married Billy Osburn Powers and Lila Shrader married James Willis Cloyd. Samuel Homer Shrader, s/o Francis Marion 'Pet' Shrader & Rachel Maloney Harman. Mary Virginia Wilburn, d/o Andrew 'Jack' Wilburn (full name probably Andrew Jackson Wilburn) & Martha Neel]. Mrs. Curtis Stephenson has received word from Fort Eustis, that her husband has been promoted to Corporal. Cpl. Stephenson is stationed at Fort Eustis as an instructor. [See second article above for genealogy]. Frank Harman, of the U. S. Army, is spending a furlough with his parents here, Frank is stationed in Texas. Mrs. Cinley Wilburn, of Portsmouth, Ohio, is visiting friends and relatives here this week. [A possibility Mrs. Wilburn MIGHT have been visiting J. Robert Wilburn and his wife, Bertie Marie Tabor a d/o Ezra Isaiah Tabor and his second wife Berite Virginia Ruble a d/o Madison A. Ruble & Christina Neel. Ezra Tabor was first married to Albina Peters ]. Miss Bonnie Jean Tickle has returned after spending several days in Spartansburg, S. C. with her aunt, Mrs. James Tiller and Mr. Tiller. [From an August 6, 1943 "Clinch Valley News" article we know Bonnie's aunt was a daughter of Ben Stephenson and the wife of James M. Tickle]. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Slade had as their supper guests Thursday night, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Metcalfe and Mrs. Bill Mahood of Bluefield. [Mrs. James ROY Slade, however, I do not know who Roy Slade or Bill Mahood married. Roy's parents were Gratton Wysor 'Grat' Slade and Ann Clifford Carbaugh. I believe the Mrs. Bill Mahood would have been the wife of William Kenneth 'Bill' Mahood, s/o Clarence Hoge Mahood, Sr., & Anna Bell Porter. Bill Mahood served in WW II. Bill Mahood died 29 June 2000 at a Tazewell Va., hospital. I have no data about the Mr. and Mrs. Metcalfe, at this time]. Betty Thompson, of Bramwell, is visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson. Grat Slade is out on his annual threshing tour. Mr. Slade has been running a threshing machine in this and adjoining communities for 20 years. [Gratton Wysor 'Grat' Slade, 1883-1965, s/o John William Slade & Permelia Ann 'Amelia' Walker. Grat Slade married Ann Clifford Carbaugh, d/o William Hamilton Carbaugh & Elizabeth Holland Gregory]. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Stephenson received a letter from their son, Sgt. James K. Stephenson, who has been wounded overseas. [This is the same Ben Stephenson that had a daughter (name unknown to me at this time) who married James M. Tiller and lived in Spartansburg, S.C.]. ADDED DATA: I am wondering if Benjamin Stephenson is the same as this James Stephenson family found in the 1920 Bluestone/Graham area of Tazewell Co., VA? There is a James K. Stephenson in the following family, in the 1920 Census, that would have been of the age to serve in WW II. I have been unable to find a Benjamin Stephenson listed in the Clearfork Dist., of Tazewell Co., VA in 1920 or 1900. If this is the same family as Benjamin Stephenson then one of the young women listed would have been the wife of James. M.
