FRIENDS: Clinch Valley News, Friday, January 27, 1888, Tazewell Court
House, Tazewell Co., VA *
Twice a year Mr. Joseph Beard of Thompson's Valley, remembers his
friends, the NEWS, by bringing in a good bushel basket of his own make.
Wish he had a hundred neighbors of the same consideration. Not that we
want a couple hundred bushel baskets, but at least one call a year in
return for fifty-two would not be straining the point of etiquette.
(This was Joseph Robert Beard, he married Mary Margaret Lowman and the
are the parents of Johnson Chapman "John" Beard who was married twice
and had several children.).

* Tazewell Court House was one of the three names Tazewell, Tazewell
Co., VA. has been named to this date. The other one was Jeffersonville,
after
Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson , a President of the United States at
one time and the governor of Virginia from June 1, 1779 - June 12, 1781.
The name Tazewell Court House was given due to the courthouse being in
that geographical location of the county. The name Tazewell is believed
to be in honor of Henry Tazewell, a well known Virginian and his son,
Littleton Walker Tazewell , became governor of that state at an early
time in its history ?March 31, 1834 - March 30, 1836. Tazewell County,
Virginia formed in 1799.

Three of my direct ancestors signed one of the many petitions:
David "Dave" Shrader, Sr.,  (name entered as D. Screder in 1796-1797 and
as David Shreder in 1799) , Frederick Sluer (should be
Sluss-Americanized from Schlosser - Frederick also known as Jared Sluss.
His name was entered as Frederick Sluss on the 1797 & 1798 petition) and
John Knuckles, Jr. (This name Americanized to Nuckles).

A note of interest:
In the 1795 petition to form a new county from Wyhte and Russell
Counties a
John Beard signed the petition. This petition was of Wythe County,
Virginia-Oversize Box 13, # 3462, November 25, 1795.

These petitions to farm a new Virginia county were signed in 1793, 1795,
1796, 1797, 1798 and 1799.

Littleton Walker Tazewell, son of Henry Tazewell , and of James City
County, VA. had objected to the formation of  the county . When the
sponsor of the legislation for the new county changed the name to
"Tazewell" on the submission form Littleton Walker Tazewell gave his
approval. His father, Henry Tazewell, had died early in 1799, and it is
believed the county was named in his honor.
