Article from Falls Mills, 1902 - Tazewell Co. VA Clinch Valley News Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA 1902 Published each Friday Established 1845 Cost: $1.00-in advance Articles regarding: Falls Mills, VA Friday, April 25, 1902 Falls Mills, (Special Correspondence) Falls Mills, April 22-Charlie Compton, who was hurt several days ago on the railroad by the track jack splitting and letting the rail fall on his leg, is still in a dangerous condition. Crockett Sarver, who lost his leg in trying to board a moving freight train several months ago, has been dangerously ill, but is thought to be better at this writing. (See more data on the Sarver families below). Ed Bucklin (sic), has a job with the American Bridge Co. This means no more stealing, if Ed is awake. (This must have been an inside joke in the community).(I believe this to be Charles Edward Buckland, Sr., who married Lizzie B. Hudgins on 18 Jan 1905 -from earlier CVN data I sent-in their "From our Early Files". Charles Edward Buckland was apparently known as Edward/ED). Mrs. Emily Bucklin (sic) visited relatives and friends in Bluefield last week. (Emily "Emma" Tabor, d/o James Harrison Tabor & Nancy Moore Runion/Runyon). C. M. Deyerle visited friends and relatives in Roanoke last week. (I have never heard of this surname). E. A. Deaton has rented the property formerly owned by A. B. Bower, and is keeping bachelor’s hall. Madam Rumor has it that Ed will not bach but a short while. (O. K. in the Taborsville, May 9, 1902 article about Taborsville, it stated Ed was no longer a bachelor. So we can assume he married between April 22, 1902, -when the, for Falls Mills, sent this to the Clinch Valley News and may 9, 1902). (Edward A. Deaton, married Lela Stafford, of Giles Co., VA. Edward A. Deaton was the s/o Rev. Fabius Levi Deaton and Sarah Regenia "Virginia" Shrader,. Sarah Regina Shrader, d/o James Britton Shrader & Mary "Polly" Day. James Britton Shrader was a brother of Mary "Polly’ Shrader, wife of Francis Tabor and another of James’ sisters was Mildred Permelia "Milly" Shrader who was the wife of the brother of Francis Tabor, Richard Adam Tabor). The Tazewell Co., VA Marriage Record had Mary Shrader’s name as Mary Sanders. On the same page Nancy Shrader is listed as Nancy Sanders. Nancy Shrader was the first couisn of Milly and Mary Shrader). At present the wheat crop in this section looks like a total failure. W. E. Dudley has moved his family from this place to Williamson. W.Va. (I believe this MIGHT have been William E. Dudley, s/o Hugh D. Dudley & May Jane Shuffleberger. If this is the man I think he was married twice. First he married Margaret L. "Maggie" Gillespie on 6 Aug 1881and then on 25 Aug 1897 he married Minnie B. Etter). Mr.Riley, bridge foreman on the N & W, paid our village a visit last Sunday. (Not certain which Mr. Riley, there were severaL, but I do not know who was the bridge foreman. N & W-Norfolk & Western Railroad). Mr. Sheb Gillespie and wife were visiting Mr. Robert Gillespie last Sunday. (Robert Gillespie MIGH have been the father of Margaret L. Gillespie, the first wife of William E. Dudley. Margaret’s father was a Robert and her mother was Kate E.-I do not know Kate’s surname).(Also: Posted in a Tazewell Co., area publication: A Mrs Rober Gilllespie died at Falls Mills, VA bef 24 Feb 1905. She was of KY. I am not certain this is the same woman as the wife of this Robert). Capt. Tom Staples made a flying visit to Bluefield last Monday. What has become of your correspondent at Italy? * We suppose that he has come to the conclusion that Italy is to far from Taborsville to ever become a town of much importance, and has become discouraged. (* Several articles appeared from a correspondent at Italy ? Actually it was Italy Leaks and Alexnader Waltham Tabor lived in that area.) Mr. S. Walton in on a business trip down East. Present indications point to several weddings in this locality in the near future. Miss Emma Greever. of Graham, was visiting friends at this place last Saturday and Sunday. (In 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census, a Emma Greever, age 21, b. Aug 1878, was listed as the daughter of John D. Greever and his wife, Mary E.-this is the only Emma I found in 1900). Business is moving briskly at the quarry. From the amount of stone that is being shipped one would suppose that the N. & W. was going to build a solid stone road bed. Bachelors are slow sale on the market at twenty-five cents each. (I have no idea what that meant). When a town has not got religion enough to save a last year’s rabbit, some one should pass the hat around and ask for a missionary. W. D. Kirtner has moved his family to this place. Thieves entered the mill of J. C. Holbrook & Co. Monday night and took a quantity of flour. They made their entrance by smashing a pane of glass then reaching in and removing the window prop. (There was more than one J.C. Holbrook in this area during this window of time). H. D. Dudley, T. Tabor, G.W. Butt and J. W. Fink, made a trip to Tazewell last Tuesday in the interest of the proposed wagon road in this locality. (I believe to be: Hugh D. Dudley, s/o William Dudley & Mary S. Deluge. Thomas Edward Tabor, Sr., s/o James Harrison Tabor & Nancy Moore Runion. Thomas Tabor, Sr., married Anna Elizabeth Parker. G. W .Butt-not certain I have a George A. Butt, b. Mar 1861; a Giles M. Butt, b. abt 1856 and a Grover Butt b. Sept 1882 (I wonder if this should have been C.W. Butt?) J. W. Fink-MIGHT have been John W. Fink , s/o James C. & Cynthia M. Fink. J. W. Sarver paid Clear Fork and Tazewell a flying visit last Monday and Tuesday. (I believe to be John Sarver since he was the only John Sarver I know of in the area at that time). 1900 Tazewell Co VA Census # 271 ClearFork (this was the falls Mills area of the census) JOHN SARVER, 33, b. Edward G."Ed" Sarver who married Evonne Tabor,d/o Berkley Kelley Tabor & his first wife, Dora Elizabeth Harry. Joseph Roy Sarver who married Lucy Beatrice "Bea" Danley Hazel Sarver who married Dennis Abshire Crockett Frazier Sarver* who married the sister of Lucy Beatrice "Bea" Danley., Elsie Bond Danley and their parnets were John Anderson Danley, Sr & Virginia. There was an older Crockett Sarver In the 1900 Tazewell Co VA Census b. 1858 and he was married to an a lady named, India. They had five children.
