TILLER The sad news reached Tazewell about a week ago of the death of Mrs. J. A. Tiller, at their home in Barboursville, Kentucky. Her death occurred on the 22nd and was not unexpected, as her health had been declining for several years. She, with her family, moved to Kentucky several months ago, and it was hoped the change might benefit her declining health. Her neighbors and acquaintances in Tazewell, among whom she lived for years held her in high esteem. She was an humble devout Christian woman, and death had for her no terrors. She left to her husband and children the rich legacy of a consistent Christian life. (I BELIEVE this to have been the wife of James Albert Tiller, b. abt 1845, s/o Ira Ellis Tiller & Nancy Hewlettt/Holbrook Carter. Ira & Nancy are the parents of Octavia Zane Tiller who married Elgin Whitley Tabor, s/o Richard Adam Tabor . I do not know the surname of the deceased. There are many Tabors kin to the Tillers in the Tazewell Co., VA area and hopefully someone will be able to help us with this family once it is posted on the web. Clinch Valley News: Friday, December 2, 1904, Tazewell, VA FORMER TAZEWELL LADY DIES IN ARIZONA The following clipping from the Arizona Republic, of November 23rd conveys sad news to many people in this section. Mrs. Watkins was well known here, wher5e, as Miss Brook Tiller, she was one of our best young ladies. Her husband, also lived in this town, and was favorably known. He has the sympathy of a large acquaintance: "Mrs. Brook Tiller Watkins, wife of R. A. Watkins, died yesterday afternoon at 2:00 at Cox’s Ranch on North Central Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins came to Phoenix recently from California where they went from their native state, Virginia in search of relief from tuberculoses for Mrs. Watkins. The funeral will take place at 2:30 p. m. today from the undertaking parlors of Easterling & Whitney, and will be conducted by Rev. Lewis Halsey of the Baptist church, of which the deceased was a member. The pallbearers will be members of the typographical union, of which Mr. Watkins is a member. Interment will be made in the Masonic cemetery. (I do not know Brooke Tiller but feel certain she was kin to Ira Ellis Tiller so for that large family doing research I am typing this so, hopefully, some of them might find it on the web). Mathews , of Graham, an old Tazewell man, was here on Monday. We understand Mathews is an applicant for office of Postmaster at Graham, and we feel sure he will do the best if he should get the appointment. Mr . Mathews has many friends in this section who would be glad to see him appointed. (Mr. Charles Wesley "Wes" Matthews -with a double t-, s/o William R. Matthews & Nancy Williams. Wes is kin to my brother-in-law. Wes was a Confederate War Veteran and lived to be 102. He was also a member of No. 222 Harmon Masonic Lodge in Bluefield, VA). I do not wish any person to take this in the wrong way but I must say that I can see that the reason we are getting all the wonderful information on so many of our kin is because so many were MASONS. I can personally tell you that they are the good-doers and the movers and shakers in a lot of areas. The Tazewell Co., area, in this era, was run by these dedicated men who were the pillars of their communities-personal opinion-Karen.
