Hess Discharged from Service, 1945 - Tazewell Co. VA (Submitter note: This article is a clipping taken from a Richlands newspaper dated July 5, 1945, in the possession of Willy Shelton. S-Sgt. Glenward Hess Makes Excellent Record In Army S-Sgt. Glenward G. Hess, son of Mr. And Mrs. Robert Hess, Raven, Va. Has been discharged from the Army with a record he and all his friends should be proud of. The following was taken from his Honorable Discharge and Separation papers. S-Sgt. Hess before entering the armed forces attended school at Mill Creek, Va. He was a general farm hand, plowed planted, cultivated and harvested various grain and vegetable crops on a 90 acre farm. Drove wheel tractor and horse team cared for livestock. He dug bituminous coal in slope mine using pick and shovel. Set timber and fired own shot. Loaded coal into hand cars. He was a Section Leader and supervised 32 men of a reconnaissance platoon driving 3 armored cars and 6 jeeps. Reconnoitered enemy front line positions for strength and disposition of forces. Read contour maps and sketches for plotting positions. Was awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service and the Purple Heart for wounds. Participated in European campaigns from Normandy to Czechoslovakia.
