Russell County Man Dies; Leaves 262 Surviving Descendants

Leaving 262 surviving descendants, Mack Hess, 88, will be laid to rest this afternoon in the 
family burying ground near his home.
  Residents of Russell county say that this man has the largest family in the history of the 
county.
  Mr. Hess, of Raven, died at his home on Horton Ridge Tuesday night following an illness of 
several months. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home with the 
Rev. Mr. Sutherland and the Rev. Mr. Edwards in charge.  
  Mr. Hess was born in Russell county, near Backsford, January 5, 1858, and resided in that 
county all his life.  He was a successful farmer having engaged in that vocation during most of 
his life.
  He was married three times, his first and second wives having preceded him in death several 
years ago.  He was last married to Miss Elizabeth Honaker, who survives.
  Mr. Hess was the father of 20 children, 12 of whom survive.  They are: Mrs. Myrtle Price, 
Mrs. Mary Lawson, Joe, Leonard, C. C., and Burgess Hess all of Raven; Mrs. Ethel Smith, of Red 
Ash, Va.; Mrs. Leona Compton, of Swords Creek, Va.; Mrs. Agnes Meade, of Washington, D.C.; John 
H. Hess, of Iaeger; Irvin Hess, of Cliffield, Va., and Corbett Hess, of the U. S. Army.
  Also surviving are 175 grandchildren and 75 great grandchildren.
