Newberry Death, 1944 - Tazewell Co. VA (Submitter note: This article was taken fron the News Progress published in Richlands, Virginia, Thursday, June 1, 1944 in the possession of Willy Shelton.) Pvt. Herman E. Newberry Pvt. Herman E. Newberry, who died in the service of his country in the South Pacific area on May 31st, 1943. Pvt. Newberry was the son of Mrs. Reece B. Newberry and the late Mr. Newberry whose death occurred a few months ago. He was inducted into the service on Dec. 3, 1942 and took his basic training at Camp Wheeler, Ga. From where he was transferred to San Francisco and went overseas in March 1943. Before entering the Army he was employed by the Raven-Red Ash Coal Co. This paper did not learn of Pvt. Newberry's death until plans were being made for the American Legion Memorial Day service. The Legion planted a tree to his memory on Road Ridge Sunday afternoon when the other war dead from that section were thus honored.
