In the 1948-1950 years it was $2.00 per year-in advance ***=Not certain which person of this name is indicated by article or data typed for later use ****= I do not have this person, in my files, and therefore have not placed with a family The first one is the only Tabor related article I have from the 1948-1950 papers typed at this time. It just happened to be on the same as that of Charles Wesley Matthews and I was particularly interested in now for my sister. There are four pages at the end that are not in order since I just added them from another file. __________________________________________________________________ DEATH: Clinch Valley News, Friday, October 13, 1950, Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA. M. Hunter, of Tazewell County, has introduced into the house a bill to change the name of Poor Valley to "Freestone Valley." Mr. Hunter stated that "Poor Valley" was a "misnomer," and remarked that the section was a rich farming region and that the inhabitants resent the name. It is stated that a man named Poe settled in the section in the year 1755 and it became known as "Poes Valley." Later being called "Poor," delegate Hunter explained. The name "Freestone" decided upon by residents is taken from the sandstone soil common in that region. SLUSS TOPS NATION IN SALES FOR HIS FIRM Haskell Sluss, widely known salesman of Bluefield, W. Va., was notified a few days ago that in 1940 he led the national sales force of his employer, Shaw-Baton Inc., Coschoton, Ohio, calendar and advertising specialty manufacturing. To make this record, who represents this and other companies in 28 southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia counties, had to beat 150 salesmen employed by the company all over the united States. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph had this to say: "Incidenatally, the Bluefielder has done a great deal to publicize the city’s much-vaunted air-conditioned summer climate among the sales staff of the company". "R. L. Husson, vice president, of Shaw-Barton, wrote the chamber of commerce: "It is my ambition to be in Bluefield some day when the temperature runs into the 90’s so that I can get all of the lemonade I have wanted for years, dished out by those Bluefield maidens dressed in shorts. I understand this is a penalty willingly paid by the chamber of commerce and its members each time Old Sol pays a dirty trick on the community."
