Article from Taborville, 1902 - Tazewell Co. VA Taborsville Clinch Valley News Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Clinch Valley News, Friday, March 7, 1902, Tazewell, VA The Flood at Taborsville Taborsville, Va., March 4,._ We had another big flood freshet the 28th of February, which did a great deal of damage to farms and along the water course. The water was higher than it was last June. There was a large amount of fencing swept away. The Thomas and Buckland Bridges on Mudfork were washed away. The Thomas bridge lodged on a bank about four or five hundred yards from where it was. The Buckland bridge has not been found. The last seen of it, it was going over the falls at Falls Mills. The branch railroad, which runs from the main line to the Italy stone quaries (sic) was covered with water. The wagon road, which leads from Falls Mills to Graham is passed traveling horseback on account of drifted rails, logs, brush, and washouts. Mr. Neel, of the Flat Top yards, had to come out of his house on account of the water. Two of Mr. Austin’s mules, and fodder stacks were washed away from Flat Top yards. B. P. Compton says he is damaged more than anyone in the community. (Ballard Preston Compton, s/o Cornelius & Rebecca Jane Patterson Compton) Little Charlie Caldwell has been very low with pneumonia but is getting better now. (There was a family of Charles Caldwell, s/o E.M. Caldwell. Charles had married Rebecca J. Compton , d/o Cornelius Compton & Rebecca Jane Patterson that lived in this area. Perhaps this was a child of this family or kin). Mrs. H. E. Perdue, who we mentioned some time ago as being very sick, is better at this writing. Watt Compton who has been working in West Virginia for some time, is home for awhile. The wedding bells are ringing on Belcher street. The boys say they ‘ve got their horns and pans ready. (No marriage information and the reference to horn and pans was an old custom called "Belling the Newlyweds". I remember this still being practiced when I lived in the area.- Karen EAGLE Moman). Clinch Valley News, Friday, April 4, 1902, Tazewell, VA Taborsville Items (Special Correspondence) Mr. Thomas Hill, one of our most popular farmers, was in West Virginia last week buying cattle. Mr. Bower will go into business at Pocahontas soon. Mr. C. W. Butt, of Big Branch, was over in the city last week. (Might have been Charles W. Butt, s/o William Harrison Butt & Lucelia Elizabeth Harris). Mr. H. Bane Compton is building a new home on his father’s farm. Wonder what that means? (Henry Bane Compton, s/o Ballard Preston Compton and Deliah Harless). It is reported on good authority that a ten-foot vein of coal has been found on the land of Bob Thompson on Mud Fork about six miles west of Falls Mills. We hope this is more coal than excitement. Well, one of the Falls Mills bachelors has got married and from all appearances there may be another wedding soon. (Didn’t this good person know we would have wanted to know, a hundred years later, who got married? My my). Perhaps or Falls Mills correspondent could tell us something about it… (This is actually how the next line appeared). G. P. McMullen, of Springville, was in town collecting taxes last week. Compton, son of Ballard Preston Compton & Deliah Harless). (I show Charles E. Compton married Emma J. Poe, d/o James A. Poe). On this same day this obituary appeared on the front page: DEATH: Clinch Valley News, Friday, May 9, 1902, Tazewell, VA Death of J. H. Tabor James H. Tabor, a well known citizen of Thompson Valley, died on Tuesday morning. He had been sick for sometime but few of his acquaintances outside of his immediate community knew of his sickness, and his death, therefore, was a great surprise. He was a kind and genial man and had many friends who appreciated him for his many virtues. He leaves a wife and family to mourn their loss, to whom the community extend deep sympathy.
