Article from Taborville, 1902 - Tazewell Co. VA Clinch Valley News Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Established 1845 Published Each Friday Cost-$1.00-In Advance May 16, 1902 TABORVILLE (Special Correspondence) H. D. DUDLEY is having a well drilled at his residence which will add greatly to the value of his property. (Hugh D. Dudley, b. abt 1823 NC, d. abt 10 Feb 1911, and married Mary Jane Shuffleburger, d/o Elias). MR. & MRS. . TABOR BELCHER were the guest of MR. & MRS. J. R. HARRY last Sunday. (I do not have a Tabor Belcher. The daughters of James R. Harry were: Dora Elizabeth who married Berkley Kelly Tabor and at ther death Berkely married Nonnie Mae Walls and Ella Mae "Ellie" Harry who married a Mr. Goforth. I wonder if this should have been Tobias Belcher? Reading this a hundred years later means we may never know). MR. & MRS WILL COMPTON were visiting friends at Little Burg W. Va., this week. (There are two William Comptons in 1900 Tazewell Co., VA in the same location. One was William Scott Compton age 42, b. Dec 1857 with a wife Martha. The other was also a William S. Compton age 53. B. Dec 1846 with a wife named Charlotte). I feel certain they were kin but these two families have had me puzzled for years. I actually think the Wm Scott Compton in the 1900 tazewell Co., VA Census is Winfield Scott Compton and his wife was Martha Ann Franklin. I think they just misread his name when they compiled the book I have of Clear Fork 1900 Census District of Tazewell Co., VA. Winfield and Martha had several children by 1900: 1900 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS # 309 Clearfork Dist, W. L. Stephnes, enumerator WM SCOT COMPTON 42 b. Dec 1857 Va., farmer (All b. VA) .....Martha 39 b. July 1898 dau FROM 1941: DEATH: Clinch Valley News, Friday, February 16, 1906, Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA...reprinted in "From Our Early Files" in Friday, February 14, 1941, edition Wingheld (sic) Compton, well known citizen of Falls Mills, was shot and killed by Dora Taylor, aged 13 who said she fired at Compton only to scare him. I have the 1906 article that tells more about this shooting: Clinch Valley News Friday, February 16, 1906 KILLED BY A YOUNG GIRL Wingfield (sic) Compton, a N. & W. Brakeman, Killed by Dora Taylor, Near Falls Mills Wingfield (sic) Compton, a well known citizen of Falls Mills, was killed on a work train near Neymours on Tuesday. The remains were buried on Wednesday at Falls Mills. Compton was killed by a young girl, Dora Taylor, 13 years old, who lived, with her father and family near the railroad, and says she shot at Compton only to scare him, and claimed that the trainmen were in the habit of flirting with them, and making indecent remarks, etc, when the trains passed or were working in the community. On this occasion the work train was standing near the Neymours house and as the train pulled out the girl fired at the train. Compton, who was standing on the gondola, received the shot and was killed. The Taylor family bear an unsavory reputation. The girl, and her sister, 14 years old, will be sent to a reform school. MRS. A. A. CARTER of Bluestone and MRS. I. H. HARRY and MRS.. WILL KERTNER (sic) of Falls Mills, were visiting in Taborsville last Monday. (Mrs . Alexander Albert "Alex" Carter. I only have her as the first wife-Cynthia B.-no surname. Mrs. I. H. Harry-Mrs. Isaiah Handerson Harry was Meldora Moore Tabor, d/o John Andrew tabor and his first of three wives, Martha A. Compton. Mrs . Will Kirtner, I do not know). MR. THOMAS HILL who was mentioned in the News as being on the sick list had a severe attack of pneumonia fever, but he is better at this writing. His little brother Eddie has also got a lite attack, and the father Mr. W. G. Hill is on the sick list, but hope he will be all right in a few days. Mr. Hill is one of the best men in this town, and has the sympathy of the entire community. (Son of Wiley G. Hill & Nancy B. Perdue, d/o Henry Sila/Silas Henry Perdue, Sr., and Nancy Jane Powell).
