Leslie, Editor Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Established 1845 Published Each Friday CVN Feb., 16, 1906 Tip Top Tip Top, Va., Feb. 14 The Silent Reaper has been gathering a heavy harvest of human souls in our community during the last few says, and there are many sad and broken hearts and darkened homes amongst us. Your correspondent will try and give you the sad record. On Sunday, the 4th a son of W. B. Norton died at bailey, of diphtheria. He was sick for several days but was thought to be getting better, when he grew suddenly worse and lived only a short time. Tuesday evening the 6th, Miss Magda oldest daughter of Mrs. Mary N. Wallace, of Springville, passed away, having been sick a long time with consumption. She was 28 years of age. On the 7th, a son of Taylor Billips of Mud Fork, died from a brain or spinal trouble, thought to have been caused by a fall on the ice. He was buried on the 9th anniversary of his birth and was one of twins. (John Taylor Billips & Mary H. "Polly" Mathena were the parents of the twin. The twins were Samuel H. "Sammie" Billips and Thomas W. Billips both born Feb 1897. It was apparently Samuel H. Billips who died ..see 1900 & 1910 Census of Tazewell Co., VA at the end of this article. Mary H. Mathena was the d/o John Wilson Mathena & Mary Havens-the sister of Martha Jane Havens who was the wife of James Russell Tabor and another sister, Eleanor Havens, who was the wife of Stephen Paris Tabor). 1900 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS # 121 Clearfork Dist., W. Feb 1897, twin son .....Thomas W., 8, b. Feb 1897, twin son 1910 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS Dist 0096, Visit 0536 J. TAYLOR BILLIPS, 55, b. VA (all in home b. VA) .....*Polly, 54 wife .....Charles A., 18, son .....Thomas W., 13, son Mr. Kelly George, of Mud Fork, was buried on the 9th, having been killed at the mines, at Pageton, on Tug River. He left a wife and two small children. Virgie Wagner, aged 12, died on the 7th, near Macedonia church, of measels. She was a daughter of Stafford Wagner, and had been afflicted all her life. Mr. Wagner has a son very low with pneumonia and measles. (Virgie Jane Wagner, b. 17 Jun 1893, d/o Adam Stafford "Uncle Stafford" Wagner & Margaret Levenia "Aunt Lou" Tabor, d/o James Russell Tabor & Martha Jane Haven. Virgie Wagner is buried at Hugh Tabor Cemetery at Mud Fork, Tazewell Co., VA). Dudley Baker lost a child on the 12 (th) from what was thought to be meningitis. (Dudley Davis Baker married Sarah T. Tabor, d/o Stephen Paris Tabor & Eleanor Havens. Dudley Davis Baker, s/o James William Baker & Fannie Ellis Baker. The only daughter of Dudley and Sallie Baker I have that I have no marriage data for is an Alice J. Baker, b. Jan 1894-Does anyone know if this was the daughter that died?). There was a death last week near Tip Top, a young child of Bascomb Smithford, colored, caused by measles. Many more in the vicinity are very sick at this time.
