Leslie, Editor Tazewell, VA Established 1845 Published Each Friday CVN APR 27 1906 TIP TOP DANIEL CARTER DEAD Frightful Accident on New Railroad-Revival Meetings Tip Top, Va., Feb. 26 Daniel Carter died last Saturday night, at his home on Bluestone, aged nearly 80 years, leaving four sons of a family of nine children, seven of whom were boys. He had been sick a long time. Mr. Carter was a good citizen in every respect, and was well known all over the county. We will miss Uncle Daniel. (Daniel Carter’s sister, Rebecca, marred John Bailey and one of John & Rebecca Bailey’s daughters, Susanna A. "Susan" Bailey, married Howard J. Tabor, s/o James Russell tabor & Martha Jane Havens. I do not know if Howard Tabor was Howard James Tabor or Howard Jackson Tabor) Marriage: page 42 (org pg 28) Tazewell Co., VA. "Celebrated the rites of matrimony by Wm. V. Mch 1869, VA, farmer A terrible accident occurred last Thursday, on the new road, on Laurel above Pocahontas, in which three men were killed and Gratton Billips, son of J. T. Billips of Mud Fork, badly injured, by a blast. Your correspondent has no particulars, and does not vouch for the truth of the report. (I believe Gratton Billips to be the son of John Taylor Billips & Mary H. "Polly" Mathena. Mary H. Mathena was the d/o John Wilson Mathena & Mary Havens-the sister of Martha Jane Havens who was the wife of James Russell Tabor and another sister, Eleanor Havens, who was the wife of Stephen Paris Tabor. I do not find Gratton in the 1900 Census for some reason). This section had a sever and injurious frost on Monday night. It is hoped, however, that some fruit has escaped. Farmers are busy sowing oats and preparing to plant corn. Rev. Mr. Addington has been carrying on a revival at Tip Top for several days.
