Leslie, Editor Tazewell, VA Established 1845 Published Each Friday CVN October 12, & 19, 1906 Friday, October 12, 1906, Tazewell ,VA Mss Cora Carter Dies Form the Effects of a Wound in the Knee-Shooting a Mystery Tip Top, Va., Oct 10 Miss Cora Carter, age 15 years, daughter of Peter Carter, of this place was shot on last Friday evening before 11 o’clock and died the next morning from the effects of the shooting. Dr. R. B. Gillespie of Tazewell, assisted Drs. Pyott and Reynolds amputated the girls leg in which the load of shot had, entered, in an attempt to save her life, but she expired almost instantly after the operation. As to circumstances of the shooting very little is known for certain. Cora Carter was at the house of Stephen Mathena, here at Tip Top washing. No one was at the house at the time except the girl and a young son of Mathena, named Howard, a boy about 15 years old, who claims that they were playing, and knocked a gun down and it was accidentally discharged. The girl said she never saw the gun, and did not know how the shooting happened. Opinion is divided in the matter. (I do not find a Peter Carter or a Dora Carter in the 1900 Tazewell Co., VA Census- See next article of October 19, 1906. Howard W. Dr. Francis "Frank" Pyott, Dr. Alexander Reynolds, age 68 in 1900 b. Sept 1831. Miss Josie Whitman, daughter of James Whitman, of Horsepen, is still very ill at the home of her sister, Mrs. Houston Moore. She has typhoid fever. Friday, October, 19, 1906, Tazewell, VA MATHENA ARRESTED-SENT TO GRAND JURY Boy Who Shot Miss Catron (sic) at Tip Top Given Preliminary Hearing Here Saturday Howard Mathena, charged with the shooting of Miss Cora Catron, at Tip Top, as reported in the last of this paper, was arrested last Saturday at Tip Top, and brought before H. G. Perry, Esq., for a preliminary hearing. Mathena was committed to jail to await the action of Grand Jury, bail being refused. On Monday counsel, Harman and Pobst, brought the case before Judge J. H. Stuart. Bail sum of $1,000.00 the father becoming surety. It will be recalled that Miss Catron, a young girl was doing the family washing at Mathena’s when she was shot by some means in the leg. Amputation became necessary, and the girl died. Mathena said they were playing and knocked the gun down when it was discharges, striking the girl. She said she did not see a gun at all and did not know how the accident occurred. Mathena must explain to the Grand Jury.
