TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - Seabury Howell Arms, 6 Jan 1918 ----¤¤¤---- "Clinch Valley News: Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Friday, January 18, 1918 MRS. SEABURY ARMS A Brief History Mr. McTeer Saunders furnishes the following interesting facts of the life family, etc., of MRS. SEABURY ARMS: MRS. SEABURY HOWELL ARMS was born I Grayson county, November 30, 1818, died near Springville, at the home of her daughter, MRS. JENNIE CARTER, January 6, 1918. As you can see she was in her 100th year of her age. She was the widow of THEOPHILUS ARMS, who died of paralysis about 40 years ago. On the 21st birthday of MRS. ARMS her first child, the late MRS. MARTHA ANN OSBORN CARTER was born. MRS. ARMS was the mother of six daughters and two sons. There were at one time six widows in the family counting herself and one granddaughter. One of these, MRS. MARTHA CARTER, was twice a widow, her first husband being WILEY OSBORN (sic), who was either killed or died in the army. Her second husband was the late HUGH CARTER. MRS. JENNIE CARTER, widow of THOMPSON CARTER, brother to HUGH CARTER, MRS. NICK WALLACE, lately deceased, wife of WARD WALLACE and I believe one other daughter, a MRS. BROYLES of Smythe county, or Bristol. MRS. MAGGIE HARMAN, now MRS. C. M. NASH, is a granddaughter, and MRS. LAURA GROSECLOSE, whom you enrolled among the "elect" of Julletta, Idaho, is also a granddaughter of MRS. ARMS, being the only child of one daughter, the first wife of ALFRED TILLER. Another granddaughter is former MISS LETTIE OSBORNE (sic), the wife of a minister whose name I do not recall, living in Texas. MISS LETTIE and MRS. NASH are daughter of MR.S MARTHA OSBORN CARTER and WYLE OSBORN (sic). MRS. EDNA DICKENSON, of Roanoke, the only child of HUGH CARTER, the second husband of MRS. MARTHA CARTER, is also a granddaughter of MRS. ARMS. MRS. NASH’S children by her first husband, the late ELIAS HARMAN, are MRS. ETHEL SHARITZ, of Illinois, who has children nearly grown, and who are, therefore, the great grandchildren of MRS. ARMS ; JESSE A. and WALER HARMAN, baggagemen (sic) of the C. V. Division of the N. and W., and a son also at Camp Lee, CLARENCE, who was present at the funeral and burial. These Harman boys are great- great grandsons of of the deceased, and no doubt there are others. MRS. WALLACE’S children are most all in the coalfields. JAMES and MRS. ROBERT FLESHMAN and MISS ANNIE WALLACE are at Northfork; CHAPMAN, at Welch; MISS JANE at Graham, JOHN ARMS, only son, has two children; THOMAS at Graham, and MRS. LEE CARTER, on Bluestone. Here is something unusual, and a nut for you to crack; One of the children of Lee Carter’s wife had at one time the following; Three great grandmothers, two great grandfathers, two grandmothers, two grandfathers, all living. When my father came to Tazewell we lived in the same house for sometime with MR. and MRS. ARMS. I never saw MRS. ARMS the least out of humor, or heard her speak a word of harm to any one. She was a great reader, especially of the Bible, up to about three years prior to her death when she had a fall, fracturing her hip. After the accident she was confined to her room and bed to the close of her long life. McT S. ADDED DATA: C. V. = Clinch Valley N. By looking at the census and marriage records (of three daughters) you can tell this family came from NC and was apparently in Grayson Co., VA., for awhile before settling in Tazewell Co., VA before the 1850 Tazewell Co., VA Census was read.
