TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA - OBITUARIES - Hugh D. Dudley, 3 Feb 1911 ----¤¤¤---- "Clinch Valley News’ Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA Friday Feb 10, 1911 Pioneer Citizen Dead At the home of his son, James Dudley, in West graham, last Thursady at 1 o’clock, Hugh D. Dudley, one of the most respected citizens of Tazewell County, passed to this eternal reward. The deceased was in his eighty-ninth years and has been in failing health for the past two years. A few weeks ago he began to grow weaker, and medical assistance could not turn his condition for the better. Funeral services were conducted at the home Friday afternoon by Rev. George S. Mc Cleary, of the Christian church and the remains were taken to Pulaski county and laid to rest, near Dublin beside his wife, who preceded to the grave by forty-seven years. Mr. Dudley reared a family of seven children, three sons and four daughters, all of whom survive him. They are Mrs. J. C. Fink, of Falls Mills,; Mrs. Mary J. Brown, Pampa , Texas; Mrs. J. G. Mc Guire, Shraders, Va.; Mrs. Maggie E. Thompson, of Rocky Gap, Va; W. E. and D. W. Dudley, La Folette, Tenn.; and James F, Dudley, all of whom attended the last sad rites except Mrs. Brown, who, on account of her health was unable to visit her father during his last illness. Mr. Dudley was born August 17, 1822, near Mt Airy, N. C, and when a boy started with his parents and two of his father’s brothers for Indiana, but travel in those days was slow and many hardships were met with, so his father was forced to abandon the trip after reaching Pulaski county, where the family located, and where the deceased resided until the early fifties, when he come to Tazewell county in search of cheaper land, and bought the R. A. Harrison farm near falls Mills, where he was a permanent resident since1864, until after he sold the land to the railroad company, more than two years ago. He served in the Confederate army until Lee’s surrender. His wife died in 1864. [Cynthia J, Dudley married James C. Fink Frances B. Dudley married James Gratton Mc Guire William E. Tabor & Elizabeth Crockett Mary Jane Shuffleberger, d/o Elias & Nancy Shuffleberger, died 5 July 1864]. Related article: Friday, February 10, 1911 Mr. Dudley Administrator James F Dudley, Hockman, was here on Wednesday to qualify as administrator of the estate of his father, whose death occurred recently. The estate amounts, perhaps to something like $18, 000, chiefly in notes and bonds, Some years ago Mr. Dudley sold his farm at Falls mills for $25,00, a part of the proceeds of which he dispensed before his death.
